View Full Version : I want QUIET

I have been following this list for several months, mostly just listening. The collective knowledge is pretty impressive, to say the least. I've done all my own wrenching on more FSJ's than I care to count starting with a '67 Waggy that I bought when it was five years young, and followed by many more Waggys, cheros and J trucks over the years so I have learned a few things myself. I got sidetracked on Quattro's and airplanes for quite a while, but have come full circle I guess, now Jeep crazy again.
My current interest is a '77 J10 shortbed. It looks good and runs fine, all that is taken care of. Now I want to quiet the noise level down to where I can hear the radio. Weatherstrip is first to remedy the wind noise, and thanks to the list I know what to get and where to get it. I replaced the worn out floor mat with a decent carpet, that shut the transmission noise down adequately. What next?

The old '67 Waggy was pretty quiet (if my memory isn't clouded by nostalgia, I loved that rig). It had the '60s equivalent of the GW trim package which included quite a bit of soundproofing but I can't remember how the Kaiser boys did it. Sure was better than any of the '70s AMC FSJ's that I owned. I've seen what looks like tar paper inside doors on other cars, and sprayed in undercoating inside the door and quarter panels, but not sure how effective it is. Thoughts?
What about the aluminum foil-clad soundproofing that JC Whatzit sells, anyone have any first hand experience with it? May be suitable for body panels, but what about the bottom side of the hood? Seems like it might do some insulating too, which would be welcome in the winter.
TIA

Alaskaman, Veepster used the aluminum backed stuff in his, and said it worked very well, he even used it under the carpeting. You should email him, he is very helpful and will get right back to you.
I took my door panels off and sprayed some under coating in all the doors and the quarter panels, it helped but I need to do something about under the carpeting. The carpet is due to be changed, when I do, I want to go to the top of the firewall with some sort of sound deadening material. There is a lot of discussion on the subject from sometime in Nov. and Dec. If you check back through old post I'm sure there are a lot of good idea's there for you. M.G.

Alaskaman,
My GW came with a factory installed sound deadening material under the carpet. It is a foil backed 3/8 inch bubble wrap type of material that seems to work very well. Might help keep your cab warmer too. Good luck.

NOT the stuff that Pep-Boys sells. The aluminum foil peeled away under the hood, though the fiberglass matting still makes it quieter.

Glad you told me about this before I bought some. Any solutions as to where I can get some good stuff? I see that Raybuck sells some, but is it the same stuff as Pep Boy's?

That foil backed bubble wrap sounds really good. No popping sounds when the passenger steps on the "virtual" brake?

Anyone know where to get this stuff? ("Dealer" is the wrong answer).

2J20s, the dynamat sounds even better! I did some research on it, it even bonds to the metal so no corrosion worries. Is the Extreme worth the extra bucks?

Now to find a rich uncle.....

HEY
parts express.com has dynamat pretty reasonably ...i think its on specialBrowsing: Automotive Sound Dampening (http://www.partsexpress.com/pe/showprod.cfm?&DID=7&CATID=48&ObjectGroup_ID=37)

I thought they sold it , they have a large selection of Sound Dampening material...sprays etc...
check they're sales flyer it might be in that(it's on the site..)
I can't find mine....
I used 10 pound carpet pad on the rear panels and under the rear carpet and that worked well...
Dynamat is made to stop subwoofer noise... so it's like a cement wall ...
works great, buddy of mine has it in his car...now he doesn't have to keep tightening screws!!...

Something that is a little cheaper is the ice dam rubber membrane that roofers apply to the lower edges of your roof before putting the felt on. It is self adhesive and sticks to anything. All roofing supply stores have it. It probably isn't as good as dynamat, but it does seal up the floor boards and dampens the noise a lot.

Thanks for all the good ideas guys, and thanks to Veepster who told me by private email that the JCWhipme stuff works pretty good in SoCal but it will soak up water, so isn't good for what I want. Anyway I ordered some Dynamat, nothin' but the best for my baby (when I'm flush anyway). Will let you all know how it works.

I have the Dynamat underhood insulation. About 5 years and it still looks great. Works pretty well, but doesn't cover the entire hood. I also have dynamat in the roof, doors, and firewall, and will put something on the floors soon, not sure what. In the cargo area and all four wheel wells i have permatech spray lining. Most of the noise in the cabin is now wind noise. Not sure if much can be done about that
