Today I was driving and found myself stuck in aweful traffic for some stupid marathon. It took me 45 min. to make it one mile of stop and go driving. As I am getting out of the traffic I notice a loud rattling noise coming from under the hood and notice that my temp guage is all the way hot. I pulled over and came back a few hours later when it was cooled off. On my home it was driving fine but then after about 5 min I notice the rattling coming out again and my temp quickly raise all the way back up. Does anyone know what this could possibly be? Thanks

The rattaling is pre-ignition caused by your engine overheating. Check your cooling system over, full of coolant, fan clutch good, no trash or plastic bag infront of radiator.

..
RedRhino;
... Sad to hear of the problem. Overheating can cause many more problems. Like blowing head gaskets which can cause even more overheating.
... The overheating surely damaged your engine oil and you may be hearing lifter rattle. So change the oil and filter.
... If the rattle is mainly during strong power usage then you may have had an over rich fuel condition during the slow driving causing a build up of CARBON (http://groups.msn.com/JEEPTECH101/jeeptech.msnw) (link).
... Chevelleguy is a good mechanic so follow his advice.
Here is a link some helpful tips.
