While I'm throwing more money at Bushwood than I should be or can afford, I'm thinking about a swing-away tire carrier.

Anyone have designs for one?
Anyone have a good picture of one?

Thanks!

JC Whitney "used" to sell them and I've seen quite a few around town, but haven't been able to locate one myself either, LMK if you find one.

I was cruis'in thru an old (summer) Rosser Jeep catalog and there was a swing out tire carrier made by Olympic 4wd (I think).

Now this was not made specifically for a FSJ (what is  ) but it would bolt up to any flat, steel bumper.

If you're looking to keep your OEM bumper than this would not work, for that you need the JCW one or an original Jeep carrier.

Unfortunately, JCW no longer carries the carrier for FSJ's. In fact I believe they are no longer made (JCW brand). :(

I killed the image in the profile... easier than making it smaller.

Thanks for the JCW info - I'll check it out.

Valley Industries (the hitch people) made the carrier that JCW used to sell; unfortunately, they stopped making ALL their tire carriers, FSJ included.

I was lucky enough to pick one up used; a nice piece, though I don't know how well it will hold up a 33" spare. I sanded mine down and coated it in black Hammerite, and I'm just waiting on the time to install it, so I can put something else in my back cargo area (another seat, in fact).

Bob I can tell you I had the valley carrier on my 79 chero with a 33x12.50 hung on it for 2 years with no problems. They are/were a well built piece, just be sure to use the reinforcement pieces where the bolts come thru from the inside or the bolt heads could pull thru the sheetmetal. If it didnt come with those pieces use some good sized washers, they should do the trick also.

Yeah, they would put quite a bit of stress on the body; I was planning on fabbing some backing plates with threaded holes out of 1/2" plate steel, to distribute the load better than the small backing plates provided.

Now all I need to find is a decent Jerry can to mount back there...

Did the 33" tire block the license plate?

And where can you buy a tire cover for a 33" beast?

Seems like I recall it obscuring about a third of the plate but not bad,as for a cover your on your own there. :D

I have a swing out tire carrier that I bought from a guy about a month ago and never put it on, and have decided to go a different way, if you are interested I will sell it to you for the same price that I paid for it $45 and you pay the shipping. I bought it from a guy in Houston and it cost $15 to ship it from there to here in Washington state. My email address is
mouse43@earthlink.net I work from 2pm till 10pm pst, I will check back here and my email when I get home about 11pm.
