View Full Version : Did I put a I-6 Rad in front of my 360?

i swapped in a Radiator i bought from a member the other weekend, replacing my leak radiator and adding a tranny cooler. The fittings for the in rad tranny cooler were way smaller and the coolant overflow line was on the wrong side. I had heard that early 360's didn't have a coolant overflow reservoir so the tube just took the coolant away from the engine, but I saw a I-6 engine compartment the other day and it seems the overflow hose was just like mine, pointing to the passenger side of the truck. Am i screwing myself here?

The temp is running lower than before, in the cold side as opposed to on eighth inch into the warm section, but the radiator seems to be hotter when I pop the hood. Also, just after i swapped radiators, my radiator cap (a safety lever style) started leaking. Any similar experiences, gloom and doom stories or advice?

I also added a shroud that seems to be right and fit ok, though is has an odd radiused piece on the driver's side that doesn't really match any curve of the radiator or coolant hoses.

Thanks,

Daniel

if the radiator you put in bolted to your v8 core support with no spacers or mods, them youve got a v8 radiator smile.gif

the i6 radiator is narrower and will not directly interchange without swapping core supports or making mods

The reason your radiator is now hotter when you open up the hood is probably just because it is actually working! Your other radiator may have been clogged, so therefore it was not displacing as much water to cool; I had an old radiator that was so clogged I could rest my hand on it and not feel a thing.

I bought a new radiator for mine about 2 years ago and the over flow fitting was facing the passenger side too. I just ran a longer hose to the over flow tank.

I don't know why the fitting was different than from the factory unless this radiator fits other makes as well that have the over flow tank on the passenger side.

I just replaced the (original) radiator in my '78 a couple of months ago, and my overflow fitting was on the passenger side. The new 4-core from A'Zone though is situated on the driver's side.

It sounds like they never bothered giving these two styles of radiators two different part numbers so everybody is getting something different. And, it sounds like, everybody is getting the style they DON'T need.

BIG grin.

I thought it was ok, but I want to see what the differences are.

I am still wondering about the tranny cooler lines. The ability to flow atf is vital, and in theory the net flow rate should not change but, who knows. The fittings ended up with a diameter just under that of the hard lines, so I think it is ok.

I took a few pictures of the install, but i can't decide if it is worth a write up.

thanks,

Daniel

My I-6 Wagoneer had the overflow coolant bottle on the driver's side.

The 2 6cyl radiators I have seen have different core supports than the 2 8cyl radiators I have seen.. so it sounds like you have a 8cyl radiator

I think it is more common than not to get a replacement radiator for our FSJs with the overflow fitting on the passenger side. Probably something to do with Murphy's Law. I had a local radiator shop just remove/reinstall the radiator filler neck so the overflow tube was pointing to the driver's side.

Turtlejoe....do you have a part number for the A'Zone 4-core radiator? I'm putting a 401 in a J10 and could probably use the extra cooling capacity.

No part number handy at the moment, but it's a 4-core "Heat Buster" from the Zone. So far it's worked great along with a 180 thermostat at keeping the temp nice and cool, but it's only been in the 90's here. The real test will be in late July and August.

I think I have the receipt at work so I'll have to look around for it tomorrow.

Hey TJ how much did you pay for this 4 core radiator?

it runs for $212 on the autozone site...for a 1973 wagoneer anyway.
