I've been having an internal battle with myself over whether or not to do a complete frame offon the J. I've got the space now with the new barn and goodness knows the frame needs to be blasted and painted (think I've got some light welding repair to make too) But I wanted to get the truck operable enough to plow my driveway this winter. Last night I was checking out that 455 project site with all the picsa of Zack's resto project and it inspired me to go for it this spring.
My question is what's the best way to raise the cab off the frame without tweaking things like door jambs and drip rails. Should I remove the fenders and front clip or just try to pull the whole thing off in one piece?? The 455 project showed some cinder block set-up but wasn't to detailed on the procedure.
Any hints?

Just get you and three friends, one at each corner, and pick it up and carry it to the rear, not very heavy really.

I have done several and currently have one on the go. I pull the front clip doors unbolt everything. Cab is easily handled with two men, well stong men. of course ideal would be 4 one on each corner but bare cab isnot heavy. Get cab, clip, and box all unbolted and have it all ready to lift. call some buddies up. You need 4 to lift the box so make good use of them and lift it all at the same time. GOOD LUCK ITS A BLAST and awfull expensive $$$$$$$ ;)

Thanks for the speedy response guys, I'll keep you updated. I'll prolly start in the spring so I can plow if we ever get any snow.
I think I'm pretty sure I'll be going the custom welded flat bed route instead of trying to repair the rusted bed sides.
Hey anyone need a real solid and rust free tailgate?

How Much? How Much! I need one BAD! Has it got the chains or a paddle latch like the newer ones like my 79? I would like one with chains, cause its just cool.

It's got the chains dude! ;) It's got to be worth a C, plus the shipping to klintonville would be a bit steep I'd guess. :(

Yeah I guess so, I hate the fact J series tailgates are single way construction where it says "JEEP" cause if you slide something or dent it, it shows up on the outside! If I can ever get mine looking good, I'm gonna bolt a nice piece of diamond plate to the backside. My truck works hard, but can't take the tailgate abuse.

I'll email you a pic. the pic shows surface rust but it's been sanded and primed since.
