I vaguely remember somebody posting that there were instructions in the tech section, but I can't find them anywhere. I read through my Haynes manual, but I figure the more information, the merrier.

Just did the rear main seal on my 258....There was a fairly good diagram on the new seals plastic pack I got from NAPA. After you get the oil pan off and allow alot of time for the dripping oil to subside, then remove the rear main crank bearing...under that you should see the bottom half of the crank. Also there will be a ridge on the crank, and a groove in the bearing cap. Those are for alignment purposes. Look between the ridge and the rear of the crank and you should be able to see the upper seal ends. Light, and I emphizise lightly take a small brass punch and tap either side of the old seal. It should start moving right away. If not, then loosen all the other bearing caps, allowing the crank to drop a little, then procede as above. Install in the reverse order. Take note to put a light coat of oil on the part of the seal that faces the crank and coat the rest of the new upper seal with liquid dish detergent to allow it to slide easier. My replacement of the oil seal came off without a hitch and now theres no leaks....Good luck..

I ain't done the rear-main inmine yet, cause I ain't had to, but I did see something about it not to long ago in the tech section. Someone said that you don't even have to take the engine and trans apart to do it. they said that all you had to do was drop the oil pan. I've never seen a set up like that before, but this is my first AMC engine, so I'm not really sure. But if you look through the recent posts in the Tech Forum(I'm pretty sure it wasn't more than 10 day ago)you might find it. Wish I could be more help tp ya'.

Wagon.....you are right about not having to do anything but drop the oilpan, and rear bearing cap...I cant believe how easy it is...

Right on. I still hope I won't have to do it myself anytime soon!
