How so you decide which winch to use on your rig?

A general rule of thumb is to pick one that is rated for atleast 1.5 times your GVW. Since your Wagoneer's GVW should be 6200 I think, that's what my 78 Cherokees are anyway, I'd say a minimum of 9500lb winch. Of course I tend to go as big as possible, and if you plan on being stuck in mud, then I'd say over 10k lb. I've gotten my stock Cherokee stuck so badly in the mud that it's taken three other vehicles to pull it out.

That would be how to pick the corret "wench" smile.gif
I would be hard to go wrong with the Warn 8274.
Unfortuitly mount kits for our rigs are long out of production
from warn, I may use the Chey-kit and modify as needed
for mine.

i just bought a chicago electric 8000 lb winch from harbor freight. i got it cause it was dirt cheap. it looks to be pretty much identacle tothe ramsey 8000e and 8000 lb milemarker winches, physically, and specs-wise. im hoping it will work out ok for the very few times that i want ot have an electric winch. i plan on giving it a good test this summer before the warranty runs out smile.gif ill give a a report after ive abused it for a few months how its holding up

the advice people give me when inquiring about winches is that "you get what you pay for",wich im sure is true.

i wont try and claim a ramsey 8000e is as good as a worn 8274,anymore than my "600 watt" pyramid PB600 is as good as an alpine or punch amp.

however,i have been pretty happy with my "pyramid" car stereo amps, ;) so well see how this cheap winch works out

here are some closeups of my winch this unit was made in the 60's ,probably, according to the company...these were heavy duty units for various pulling tasks not usually a personal truck, at least that is what they told me. they also said that originally it was supposed to be 7000 lbs winch with 10k stall, but after the motor burned up it became much stronger after a more modern rebuild..
i have NEVER stalled it...a test was performed between me and my roommate...we were to drag a lifted 3/4 ton extented cab loaded chevy 30 feet on it is frame with the tires nearly completely submerged in mud. we roped off to a large tree..he went first..he has 9000i he stalled both pulls nearly right away. i made one pull straight....NEVER stalled.. it over heated the winch motor afterwords, so we had to pour water on it, but it made the pull. i guarantee this winch is at least a 10k or 12k now..just thought i'd share that.. oh these guys still do make winches..too

Scotty, if it works out, let the rest of us know! I wouldn't mind a $400 winch, if I can be sure it'll work when I need it.

I have an old 8274 and have pulled my truck up an incline, that was **** near straight up. It pulled it with no truck help, and had to spool it completly out 3 times. Thats 375'. I also had it completely buried to the top of the whell wells, in peanut butter thick mud, again, with no engine assist, pulled it out easily. Just my expirience. Dennis

I have a milemarker 10,500 lb. with 2 speed, pulls all day without overheating and only 2 amps off electrical system and the 2nd gear is great for re-spooling or light pulls....and its waterproof, but it is a hydraulic PTO off the power steering pump so engine has to be running...

Might be me if I can quit spending other $$ on projects for a month or two.

lindel, ive got all of $340 or so in it. i snagged it on sale for $279,and paid $50 for an extra year warranty. i think reg price is around $329

i have a PTO winch in my bed and it has not failed me yet. it runs off of the tranny input gear,so i basically have 4 winch speeds, and 1 "line out". in granny gear it would prolly pull the frame out frm under me,and in 4th its really fast  more often than not,i need extracted the way i went in,and ill use the pto winch for extracting stuck frineds. only reason i want an electric winch is is for the few instances wheni want to pull myself up a hill, rock or whatever,or the cases when im stuck and a forward extraction is more feasible.

ill definately let ya know how it works out.
