BORG WARNER POPPING

i have a '79 cherokee chief with the borg warner
transfer case(also has low range). when i get on
the gas it is making a popping sound.
does anyone have any ideas? [/LIST] [/LIST]

A loose chain could sound like a pop sometimes? Does it happen if you give it a lot of gas? Does the Jeep not move like it should while it's popping?

the more torque put on it the worse it pops.
in low range it pops easy.
also, i checked the chain and it is not very slack. when i bought the jeep the low range
was in a box, so i put it back together. i noticed the long spline shaft had the center gear
stuck on it. and it had slack when moved back and forth.

Replace your transfer case chain. I've had to do this on the last three Q-trac jeeps I've had, and the symptoms you've described just vanished.
