I know I sound like a broken record on this. But if you have a Ford-Motorcraft-Duraspark ignition module, replace it.

The BBD carb is a POS. I beleive that they are well known for idle problems. There are conversions to other carbs or fuel injection. You may consider rebuilding it if money is an issue. I know there others here that are more familar with the 258 that I.
Any other input on the BBD guys?

My truck stalled a lot. It turned out to be just a kinked fuel line and a shot fuel pump. Hope this helps.

as reddog said, the carter bbd carb is a POS. i went thru several on my 258,and finally replaced it with a motorcraft, which i am very happy with.
start with inspecting/replacing all vaccum lines.then spray all along the intake while the engine runs with carb cleaner,if it idels up anyplace while yuo spray youve found a vaccum leak.you may need to replace the intake gasket, the sixes are bad for leaks there, especially with the aluminum intake.make sure the ignition is in good shape(new plugs, wires, cap, rotor, etc.new module definaetly will not hurt) and set the timing.
after that,if it still wont idle and you want to keep a carter, have a shop that specializes in rebuilding carbs rebuild yours. the most common problems are clogged idle tunes, and worn throttle shaft bushings, the latter of which the rebuild kit wont take care of.rebuilding a carb is like rebuilding an engine, but worse.its easy to clean it and replace the little parts that come with the kit,but you need to know what youre doing and check all kinds of tolerances, like the trhottle shaft movement,if you really want it to run right.i wouldnt waste time with budget parts store rebuilds, either,im not convinced that they are blueprinted, just cleaned up and rebuilt with common rebuild kit. ive been thru 5 or 6 autozone reman carbs. they never last more than 6 months, usually only 3-4,and every time i take one back they give me a new one and another year warranty.same scenario-run fine for alittle while, thenno more idle.bak to the 'Zone.gets kinda old.
ive been thru several carbs, and replaced my intake gaskets 3 times trying to get a good running carter. the one time that my no idle situation was not a carter problem was when the egr valve went bad.BIG vaccum leak.
so,after youve done all the other stuff, have a pro rebuild it or toss it in the trash and replace it with a motorcraft 2bbc. im real happy with mine.
