Returning from last weekends fishing trip, had to negoitiate very step and cut up sand dune. This dune catches many people out, the more it catches to hard it get to get through. I've never any major trouble getting through before.
I'd almost get to the top, when a slight klunk would come from the transfer case, motor would rev a bit more and the back wheels would bury them selves. T-case lever still in 4 low has not appeared to have moved, but it definately in 2WD
Reversed down, changed T-case to 2WD and then back into 4 low and tried again .... same result .... T-case 'klunked' out of 4WD
This happen another three times before I was able to climb over the dune :relief:

All movement of the t-case lever and its attached bits seemed to do what they should. I've not had time as yet to fully investigate this and any suggestions would be very helpfull tring to solve this puzzle  :(

Which shifter do you have? the flag shifter or the pole shifter? Possible body-flex causing the linkage to disengauge the transfer?

What kind of hubs you have? maybe one of those is having a hard time...especially if its a vacuum motor.

graham is down under. his passenger side is our driver side. sounds like a flag shifter.

I doubt it is a shifter problem or even a mount problem. I would be leaning towards the the pads on the shift forks being worn out, and or fallen off. I marked the shift fork and the new pads in the rebuild kit.

Could be, but those motor mounts are weak.

Had a look today, t-case mount and left engine mount stuffed. So hopefully a combination of these and a bit of adjustment will be the solution smile.gif

Just to be on the safe side Pete, chuck that rebuild kit in the post, thanks mate ;)

Just to be on the safe side Pete, chuck that rebuild kit in the post, thanks mate ;) There is no adjustments on the shifter linkages anywhere. Bad mounts rarely ever effect the NP208. LOL I need this rebuild kit!!! LOL ;) I can send you the worn out pads that I have, though that 208 also popped out of Wheel Drive...........

Do two worn outs make it right

Nope! LOL If you need help getting parts I would be happy to do what I can. Not sure on what you can get for parts down there. Though The 208 was used in a lot of rigs and the rebuild kit does them all. You may have no problem at all. My rebuild kit cost $130.00 with no chain. Funny the Chain is not included in a rebuild kit. The chain was another $50.00.

jeepman,
are you saying that the flag shifter for the 208 is not adjustable?

Don't you guys have this adjustable linkage? I have a 208 and this linkage was attached when I got it. It bolted up perfect to the shifter.

i sort of have the opposite problem. the 208 will not come out of 4wd. the shift lever seems to click into 2wd and the 4wd light goes out. but, it stays in 4wd.
other than that, the 208 seems fine, doesn't make any noise, and fluid is up to level. it just won't come out of 4wd.

Pete, just check my linkage, bit dark, but same as the pic Tom posted. Adustment is on the bottom linkage. Tnis may only allow for correct lever movement???

Pull the slit pin on the linkage in the pic and see if there's any difference. May not be enough movement to dis-engage 4WD.
