I'm am about to buy a 82 Cherokee two door. I orginally wanted it for the 360 to put in my 80 cherokee, but it has a solid frame and the only rust is nothing but surface rust. I am getting it for $50 too! The engine hasn't been started in two years and we started it with a little gas in the carb and it fired right up. no nocks or clicks. it doesn't have a tranny or transfer case in it right now. but it has a clutch pedal and a clutch on the engine. what transmisson do i need to find for this jeep? I think it might be the t-18 but any suggestions on this would be great. i'm going to put a np-208 or my np219 in it after i rebuild it. thanks!!!

The stock 4-speed in an 82 Chero was a T-176.

The 208 will bolt right up to the T-176....

Yeah 50 as in $50. I couldn't believe it, now my plans are to put the good engine out of it, into my 80 and then rebuild the one out of my 80 and put it in the new one. confusing i know, but it makes since to me especially for $50!!!. rockers panels, fenders, quarter panels, tailgate and even floor boards are still there nice and still factory green! Frame is also very good. Might as well add another FSJ to the family!

The T-176 is marginal for a FSJ.

If you want a bullet proof granny lo first gear trans I'd use a T-18A but for normal use the T-176's hold up fairly well. It's not the greatest trans in the world but tougher than the light duty T-5's used behind some 258's. For a daily driver with occasional offroad use it should be fine. For hardcore trail use I'd upgrade.

A Ford T-18/NP205 or NP208 will work. Should be able to use the T-176 bellhousing if it has the dual bolt pattern or a T-150. Run a ford clutch disk and Jeep pattern pressureplate. Also you will probably need an Advance Adapters pilot bushing. The shifter will be very close to the dash, but will clear. Also you will probably have to shorten/lengthen your shafts.

well i figure for now i'll just try to find a used T-176 and a Np-208 and jsut leave it stock for now. jsut so its running. I'll leave the hard 4wheeling to my 80 cherokee with the 727 auto.

Yeh, T176 bellhousing would be best setup. You can put a Ford T18 or Ford NP435 behind it...they'll bolt right up. Do need the special bushing as FSJeeper noted, as well as Ford clutch disk. I'd get the Ford t-case with that so it will bolt up. Otherwise, if you find a T176/NP208 out of an early '80s FSJ, that'll go right in too. A T150 would as well, but is only a 3 speed, and you might as well go for 4 if you're dropping one in.

I'm hoping to go Ford tranny/t-case in my '83 J10 soon, so am looking at this option right now. Leeland(Panther4x4) has some info on his T18 swap into his Cherokee if you want some further info. Somewhere on his site: http://www.panther4x4.com

Sounds like you got a good deal! Congrats! Take care....

Around here, a Ford T-18 or NP435 and NP205/NP208 tcase would be a lot easier to find than a T-176/NP208 and a lot easier to find. Also they would be cheaper. That is the way I would go with any 1980 later FSJ with a T-176, T-4, T-5. I have never owned a T-4 but have owned a T-5 and a T-176 in FSJ's and nothing but problems with them.
Both involved healthy V-8 swaps and I am not known for being lightfooted. Stock I think the above transmissions are marginally adequate keeping in mind the T-5 was designed for a 4 cylinder motor.

The only worse Jeep transmission I have nothing but trouble with was a T-90 behind a V-8 swap.

The T-150 is a good strong 3 speed with a good rep.
