View Full Version : Rusty's 4" question

Just received my 4 springs for the Rusty's 4" kit.
They didn't send the box with all the hardware so I'm waiting for that.
One of the rear springs is about 5 inches longer than the other rear. I haven't been able to get under my truck to measure if one is longer than the other but it doesn't seem right. Are the rears different length or did I fall victim to the lack of QC that others have had with Rusty's?

The rear springs are longer than the fronts. But, if you have 2 unequal length rear springs, better get on the phone and arrange for them to ship you the right one along with the hardware they forgot.

Get on the phone and holler 'cause you got bit by Rusty's QC bug. He is good about fixing the errors though...

I don't know if Rusty has fixed this or not, but the spring eye bolt on the front springs is too large to fit into the centering hole on the spring pads. You will need to either re-use the stock ones, or grind down the head on the new spring centering bolt heads.
Bring lots of patience, a stupid-big can of WD-40, and preferably a 1" impact..... ;)
Speaking of Rusty, I need to pay him another phone call to see where my correct brake fittings have been for the last month and a half. I wish you luck Marc...and lots of patience.

Ya know I'm actually an idiot. When I looked at the springs the bottom leaf was spun around so it looked like one spring was longer than the other. They're the same redface.gif
I did talk to Rusty though, to see where the box of u-bolts, hardware and shocks were. I still haven't seen those yet.
The springs that I got don't have the bushings in them. He told me they are in the box with the other stuff. I hope he's right.
You get what you pay for(his prices are good)I guess he scrimps on the customer service/QC.

Deffantly get on the phone. I think they sent you a wrong spring.
I got my parts box, but had no hardware in it!

My rusty's springs came with bushings in them. And the front bushings are actually a tad small, asthey have a tiny bit of play on each side.

Got the shocks and hardware today. Looks like 2 piece spring eye bushings.
FWIW the shocks(Rusty said Gabriel makes them)are stamped made in USA. I got an Autozone steering stabilizer made by Gabriel in Mexico.
We'll see how it goes together.

Let us know how you wind up. I'm real curious myself since I'm about to dive into that pool as well.

hey hump what brake line fittings exactly. I was in the process of getting a new hard line from front to rear when low and behold the Banjo fitting at the frame in back was to small. So I called today and Rusty said he would check into it.

GFD, keep us posted, I'm really interested to see how this turns out.

Tad,
Got the front springs on last night, pretty academic affair. The only thing that seemed out of place was that I had to open the shackles a 1/4" because the springs are a touch wider than stock. Plus the way the bushings are on the new springs where there is sort of a collar that's wider than the spring itself. But I got it together OK. I'll be into the rear later today or tonight.

Every time I read about Rusty I hear the price is good but parts and installation can be a pain. How much more is the Skyjacker system and is the extra cash worth the hassle reduction?

The parts and installation aren't any more of a pain than any other aftermarket part. It's the QC and cust service that leaves a little to be desired.

Lift is DONE!
I got 6" inches out of a 4" kit. Either I got a 6" kit or my springs were seriously sagged from sitting.
Hopefully they'll settle a bit. It looks kinda silly with 31's.
Not a bad install. The rears were tough 'cause they were real stiff. But with a little help they went in OK.
Next on the list an alignment, 32 or 33's and a DPA.
:D
Pics to follow.

Perhaps someone should invite Rusty to come on over here to IFSJA and see some of the smack being talked about his QC! Maybe then he'll do what it takes to get his stuff right.
I hope i get my springs before he reads this post as i would hate to get an empty box from him smile.gif

That was my thought exactly. I can't see how springs should vary that much in price. I think you're paying for the Skyjacker name.

Krista had done biz with Rusty when she worked at Tuffy. When we got the 2" lift for Phoebe last year, it came in 2 packages about 2 weeks apart. She had to call him and find out where the heck the shocks were. He is a real nice guy, we just think he is having growing pains. The biz he has is apparently pretty successful. She had to reel him in just before the Ouray Invasion to get the certificate for the 4" lift. He had committed to provide it back in March er sumthin. He just let it slip his mind. He also kept telling us he wanted to be here for the Invasion. We were prepared to put him up at our place if he dropped in last minute. I think if we bear with him, things will work out in the long run. I also think the product is very good for the money.

Im running rustys 6 inch lift and like everyone else I had a little trouble with the QC and the installation was a little crazy 2 but when you want it bad enough it will fit and well worth the money. Like I've always heard "nobody's perfect" just give him a chance I'm sure he will make it right.
