View Full Version : So what if the oil pump rebuild isn't the solution?

What's next? I'm trying to prepare myself for the worst and wonder should the oil pump rebuild not change my oil pressure, how do I diagnose more significant problems and what problems are most likely?

If a rebuild is called for how much will I save if I pull the motor my self and deliver it to a shop and reinstall it when rebuilt?

It would seem unlikely that you need a rebuild with only 55k miles. Low oil pressure often stems from wear in the front timing cover. I rebuilt my oil pump at 60k miles and still barely raised oil pressure, but no problems yet almost 36k miles later.

So... since we all know these aluminum chunks of garbage stink... how come some aftermarket company didn't decide to make a replacement timing cover out of iron or steel?

This weak link is WAY to critical to keep replacing with the same faulty materials! Any of you machinist members ever consider making a mold and trying to fabricate your own? I would imagine that if you were to successfully make one out of a more durable material, your efforts will not go unwarranted. You would be known as the savior of the FSJ community! Who knows... you could sigificantly drop the prices of other makers covers as well!

Heck... I'd buy atleast two myself!

I was just wondering that myself. I wonder if the properties of another material would pose a problem in terms of different expansion/contraction.

Did you check the oil pressure sending unit?
That's all that needed replacing when my pressure showed 0.

Hey Stuart,
I also tried to log onto the web site from my reply to you and was denied access. in order to log onto it, if you're still interested is to type in the address manually. Sorry for the mix up. Hope the web site is of some help to you.

I believe the worst should be having to buy a new timing cover.I remember you saying that you purchased a new oil psi gauge and the reading was still the same.Check your Haynes book in the troulbeshooting section "under low oil psi" for more symptoms.
