I bought a Jeep Chero (83) it has engine issues. I have replaced Timing Chain set to fix a sluggish motor. This weekend the Headers go on. Anyway, while changing the Timing set I pulled off the Alternator, it had some homemade, crappy weld, make-shift bracket that wasn't quite right and it made the Alternator belt squeal and wear funny. I went to a local Jeep Wrecking yard and got (they said) correct brackets and spacers. I installed them as shown and the Alternator does't line-up right. The belt falls off. Here is a description of what I have.

No AC (although the rig originally had AC)
2 belts to Power Stearing Pump
(PS Pump belts around Water Pump and to PS Pump)

1 belt around alternator, Waterpump, and Crank (Although the Crank has 2 or 3 belt grooves in it, I can't remember how many.)

The Water Pump Pulley has 3 Belt grooves

Everything seems to lineup correctly except for Alternator. It is back about a half inch to far.

Only thing I can think of is that the Alternator is the wrong one. or the pulley has been changed. Which wouldn't surprise me this Jeep is an absolute mess, Jerry Rig would be proud of the wiring and engineering that went into it. But it will live again.

Does anyone have Pics of the Alternator belt setup that I could look at?

No pics, but the alternator belt should go around the groove closest to the engine on both the water pump and crank.

There should be a slide bracket (adjuster) on the bottom of the alternator and a "long bolt" with a spacer on the top half. Mine also has a angle bracket, but it looks homemade.

Hope it helps.

Jim

Thanks for the info, that sounds like I the setup I have. Does your rig have 2 power steering belts?
