I'm pretty good at spraying paint on most any surface BUT I've never painted a vehicle. I have a good compressor , gun, and a place to shoot it. I need suggestions on what type of paint to buy. I'm willing to buy automotive paint but not the most expensive on the market. So anybody know brand names application techniques, tips, etc.?

THEN, GO DOWN TO AUTOMOTIVE PAINT smile.gif
What about using tractor paint? Color choice is limited, but it runs about $25/gallon. It's enamel that should be pretty simple to shoot. Around here you can buy it at Big R.
If you're going to shoot it yourself I'd use laquer cause it drys quick. I like enamel better but unless you can bake it by the time it sets up you have every floating fuzzy stuck in the paint no matter how clean you think your garage is.

Arbor, I used acrylic enamel on mine, mostly because it's a one step process and will come out shiny, can be rubbed out, uses a catalyst to harden, can be spot repaired etc. Laquer is probably the most forgiving tho. The link GEM put in for autobodysupply, check it out. They have reasonable prices. I'm a novice painter, I've only done about 5 vehicles but my paint job came out very nice. J20

Is it as forgiving for rock dings dents etc as enamel is or is it brittle like laquer? I'd love to find something that's as dentable as enamel but drys as quick as laquer w/o getting in to exotics...ok it's a longshot but I thought I'd ask. ;)

It's somewhere in the middle on both accounts. Doesn't flash off as quick as lacquer. I don't know about compared to enamel. It's probably not as brittle as lacquer but does have a hardener so it will chip. It just shoots so nice that it's hard not to use. You couldn't give me two cents for the basecoat, clearcoat other than it's easy to hide finish flaws w/ it. Also, Dupont makes a cheap version of ac enamel called Nason.

the Nason is a three part polyurethane. i just painted my roof with it. i will be painting the rest of the wag another color. it works good. it was easy to mix and shoot. took a while to dry though. i got a few bugs in mine. but it is shinny and now that it has dried for a week it seems to be hard to scratch with my fingernail.
