Hi there,

Anyone know of any DIY resourses for preppeing my 79 Wagoneer for a paint job? Me and a friend plan to remove the old molding around the wood sticker. The molding is in good shape with no cracks. It just needs to be refinished. I plan to remove the old sticker and then sand down to the sheet metal. Any thoughts or suggestions? How much work am I looking at before I send it to my painter?

Thanks,

Greg

You might want to check out books on
painting cars from a large bookstore
like Broders books, etc. The better books
have lots of detailed information and
pictures to give you the steps that need to
be performed and a good idea of how much
work is involved. If you have a good air
compressor and sander you can prep your Wag
pretty well for the paint shop. You will need
to keep it out of the weather once you remove
the paint else the rust demons will do very
bad things. If you can prime and wet sand the
Wag before paint, the paint job itself should
not be overly expensive. Good luck!

You'll probly want to use a chemical stripper for the woodgrain, it'll save alot of labor trying to sand it off. Brush it on,let it sit ,the 'grain will start to bubble up and peel, go back with a plastic scraper and most of it will come off. It'll probly take a little paint with it but you're gonna sand it anyway.
