View Full Version : Removing padded dash HELP
I am about to swap out the padded dash. Can this be done without removing everything related to it,or is it relatively simple.
To get the dash pad off you'll need to remove the windshield :(
OUCH! well I've been wanting to put a new seal around the glass anyway buy, NOT RIGHT NOW! Are the screws that hard to get to?

It is unfortunately true; the heads of the bolts that retain the front edge of the dash-pad are actually concealed under that rubber gasket lip. If you carefully pry up, you may be able to get a peek at them; you'll see why you can't get a wrench on them. :( :( :(

roger that, the glass needs to come out to get to the bolts underneath the rubber -- you could probably get the bolts out if you really wanted to, but you'd be hornswaggled trying to get them back in on reinstallation. you'd tear up the rubber in any case

how easy is it to get to the bolts on the inside of the "face of the dash pad? can I reach up under the dash and get to em? I'm afraid I may have to move the under the dash air..I'm skert!

The threads do protrude down into the dash, but if you back the bolts off from underneath, you'll be
backing them off into the glass.
Clever idea, though! smile.gif

What about the "anchoring" bolts on the front part of the dash?

racerecchs,
2 bolts on each side above the kickpanels, 2 bolts on the bottom of the dash near the steering column, support brace between steering column bolt and firewall. that was the setup on my 69. that, and all the bolts along the underside of the windshield (6?)
be sure to disconnect the battery prior to pulling the dash, don;t want wires that may loosen up hitting metal and sparking

If you really want it off without taking the windshield out here is a way. You'll cut the pad up pretty good though. Take a utility knife and carefully cut the pad under the rubber strip theres room to do it. Thats all that the pad is held on up there around the bolts, no metal in the pad. The nuts holding the pad on in front are easily accessible from under the dash. You'll just have to figure out how to fill all those little holes in.
