Alright, my friend just got his 1979 J10 Honcho a few days ago, and its time to get to work on it. I really hate to talk bad about anyone, redface.gif but this guy dont know a valve cover gasket from an oil pan gasket! He said it wouldnt stay in 4WD. He said you have to hold the shifter in 4WD otherwise it will flip back into 2WD. It has the BW1339 Quadra-Trac, TH400, and a 360. Is there anything special you have to do, or is there REALLY something wrong?

Um... If it's a BW1339, it's ALWAYS in 4wd. Even if it was converted to part-time, the 2wd/4wd is controlled by the vacuum switch in the glovebox.

The lever on the floor is for the low-range unit. Is it popping out of high range into neutral?

You'll have to identify the symptoms yourself, and get back to us with what is really going on here.

Alright, I think Im going to try to get that thing out in a field tomarrow and see what hes talking about. Surely it isnt popping out of high range into neutral since hes actually drove it around a bit.

Im sorry, but when this guy says something it comes out all incoherent and youve pretty much got to figure out what he means. And like I said, he literally dont know the difference between an oil pan and valve cover gasket!
