And can you install one of those little lockers on the front axle?

The easiest locker to install in a AMC20 or a D44 is something like a loc-right or the like which is known as a "baby locker". As it doesnt replace the carrier, it just replaces the spider gears. These are also cheaper then the more heavy duty lockers. BUT...(gota love the buts :D )they are not as strong in any regaurd compaired to a locker which replaces the whole carrier like a detroit or the like. Putting a locker in the front will make driving in snow or the like on the street difficult.
Do not buy a Detroit Gearless locker. I have broken two of these lockers in my AMC20 (which also results in a broken AMC20) before I got smart and went to a normal Detroit Locker. I have not used any other of hte 'lunchbox' or 'baby' lockers.

If you want a locker in the front, go with a full locker that you can turn off and on like an ARB/DETROIT ELECTRIC or OX. This way you get the best of both worlds (for a price).

Ive run quick locs and had no problems. You can put them in quick and easy. You can put one in the front as long as you have locking hubs. Just lock them on the trail and unlock on the street. Will be absolutly no difference when unlocked. Or you could weld the spider gears in front.

KYJ10, did you get your hydro assist going? I remember you talking a while back about saying you were building it for under $100. I would love to know what you did.

Yes I did. I ended up going with a box that was already tapped. Cause I didn't feel like messing with tearing it down. Plus I know mine was in bad shape. West Texas Off Road has them rebuilt, and tapped for assist hoses for $250. So I bought the cylinder from Northern tool and the lines made up at NAPA. It was alittle more than I expected cause customized lines and the swivel fittings are costly. But works great. Welded on some brackets, and there you have it. There are a couple of pics if you click below. Dennis

I would go with the regular Detroit Locker in
the rear AMC20. They hold up great and don't
break. BJ's offroad is offering good prices
on them right now. I like ARBs in front axles
or maybe one of the new Detroit Electric
locker so you can control the locking action.
The ARBs do cost quite a bit though...
