I may be able to get a Dana 20 with the FSJ shifter, cheap. It was originally used behind a T18. Does anyone know if this Dana 20 would work behind a TH400 assuming one used the factory Th400 to Dana 20 adapter?

I believe the input gear is different, you would need a input for the Dana 20 from behind a TH400 then it would work.

Pete's correct. The D20's behind standard trannies used a different pitch input gear than the ones behind an AT.

Is the input gear the same thing as a "bull" gear. Every once in awhile I see adapters sold complete with the "bull" gear, whatever that is. Also, is the TH400 input gear hard to find? There is little sense in buying a Dana 20 for $40 and finding out one needs to purchase a $100 gear to use it.

Thanks,
Dave

I have the T-Case and Gear for the output shaft you have. It does not have a shifter though. If interested email me I will get a shipped price, if you like.

The gear cut is different depending on what year the t-case is from. The T18 gear cut is 20 degrees and the TH400 cut is 17.5 degrees on older cases. But later than all changed to the standard 17.5 degree cut. Not sure of the year though. You can find the gear that you need pretty easy. I bought mine from Novak for $35. There are a few other places that have them fairly cheap.
