Now that I have figured out the best way to start and warm the car, I am having another problem. It was stalling when I came up to red lights. It is no longer stalling but whenever I stop after just starting the car, it does not stay in the drive gear. It is hard to explain, but after I stop, the car will not move forward when I press on the gas. Then it seems to catch and gives me a good jolt. It seems to me that the car is going into neutral and then back into drive with out me doing anything. I checked the fluids and they are all okay. Any ideas?

Thanks.

May be time for some tranny work. I'd try changing the fluid and filter first. If that dont do it its time to rebuild.

Sounds like low fluid, but you've already checked that. Fluid and filter change time. Pay attention to what the fluid looks and smells like. If it smells burnt or is dark, it may be indicating more problems.

Good Luck

I agree. It sounds like a low fluid situation. Since you have checked the tranny fluid level, the next diagnosis would be a partially clogged filter. It isn't allowing enough fluid through at idle speeds to operate the tranny properly. Once the engine speeds up, the added pressure from the tranny pump overcomes the restricted filter.
I would replace the filter and change the tranny fluid. then see how it works.

I agree with doing the fluid and filter and while your down there check out the rubber trans mount as well. I had a nonexistant mount on my 83 and it moved enough that the linkage wasn't lined up poroperly anymore and it would cause problems shifting. The PO thought the trans was going bad; I put in a new $5 mount and it shifted fine smile.gif
