My drivers side interior door release mechanism (86 Grand Wagoneer) does not work unless I relieve some pressure by pulling in on the door prior to operating the handle. I'm basically clueless as to the cause, and in trying to evaluate the problem, I got stuck on trying to remove the door panel. I got all the screws and fasteners removed except for the pull handle strap (which seems to be the only thing left holding the panel on). How are the cosmetic covers for the strap removed? Any help on the door latch problem would also be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Just remove the screws throught the covers and the panel will come off. You'll have screw for the armrest base that need to come off,as well as the master control switch. Worst part is the mirror switch....it can be a real problem sometimes. I usually leave it hooked up and turn the panel upside down and rest it between the door opening and the cowl.Hope this helps.Sounds like you may have a bad latch.

If it's anything like my '88, when you pull the handle, there is a hinge that should push up a spring by the doorlatch and releases it to pop open. The hinge is just not moving enough to push the spring up far enough to release the latch and pop it open. Just give the hinge a good lube job.

harken,
You have to remove the trim pieces at the end of the straps. If I remember correctly, they are thin pieces of metal that are glued over the screw holes.
