View Full Version : Oil pressure sending unit revisited

I have a sending unit question... Some jerk-off previous owner threaded a bolt into where the stock unit goes in my engine  , a 360 by the way.So it's pretty much stripped out and useless. I'd like to keep an eye on my pressure.
My questions are:
1. Does the "octagon like" (what else would you call it?) fitting that the stock unit goes into thread into the block? Will it come out? It does turn, by the way. But for fear of ruining something an causing a huge oil leak, I left it alone.
2. Is there anywhere else that I can install a fitting for a universal mechanical gauge? I'd rather do this anyway. ;)
Somebody PLEASE help me.... :(

thats where you would install another unit, It is threded into the block...probly tight but it will come out, remember to use a little teflon tape when iinstalling another unit

What looks like a bolt may actually be the remains of the original sending unit. The top half may have just broken off. Get a new sender remove the old one and put the new one in.

Thanks, that's pretty much what I needed to know. Sadly, that fitting may be stripped beyond repair. Back to the junkyard, I guess.

I've acyually pulled the bolt out. It's a nice little grade 8 that was forced into the pipe threads. :(
Anybody,
Is there any other places to stick a sending unit or fitting? I really don't care to go back to the factory gauge since everyone thinks they SUCK! ;)

That is the only place to install a oil pressure sending unit or tube for a mechanical gauge. Either way you need that fitting that goes into the block and then use what ever gauge you want to go with. I like the mechanical Auto Meter and use the brass tube not the nylon tube that comes with the gauge. Hope this helps.

Yeah that helps... Just not exactly thrilled with the news that I have to try to repair that fitting. :( I know the BIG Advance Auto around here has a huge selection of different sizes of brass fittings. Maybe it's possible that they will have one that fits in place of the original. Otherwise, I am going to have to scrounge the junkyard or try and tap the old one. Either way, it doesn't sound like too much fun.
