Ok what I would like to know is what if any t/cases can I swap to the back of a 79 th400 that currently has a q'trac case. oh and it needs to be driver's drop so it can go in my 80 J-10. tongue.gif

Uhhh, nothing unless you get a chevy T/case and put a Chevy tailshaft in your AMC TH400.

The other thing to do is to swap the tranny, front D44 and the Borg Warner Quadra Trac transfer case. Even then, you may need a new "y" pipe for the exhaust.

You can swap the tailshaft with one from a 2WD GM TH400 (6" output shaft) and use a Dana 20 with a D20 adapter.... that's what I did. The QT is a unique 10 spline LONG shaft that only mates with the QT.

The TH400 must be completely disassembled in order to swap the tailshaft, but it is not as hard as you may think... about a 1 hour for disassembly/reassembly.

Just know that the D20 is a centered output and the rear axle diff is offset. So if you want to make it right, add a CV to the rear shaft to elliminate the vibes from the horizontil offset, or find a Dana 18 and use the guts of the D18 in the D20 (D20 case is stronger) and you will have a part time offset T-case to match your setup

thanks guys, so from what I am hearing I would be better off just getting an adapter plate to mount the 360 in front of my current chevy transmission.

You also might want to beef up the mounting ears on the D20, right, Riverbeast??

You need a driver's drop, right? You should be able to get an adapter for your TH-350 to bolt up to your NP-208.

Or... you can get a passenger-drop front axle and use a chevy x-case

Otherwise... you can attempt to mix and match parts between a Chevy and Jeep NP-208s. I don't know how much interchangability there is though, and the 4x adapter on the TH-350 might need some re-drilling (which is a good time to clock the x-case up so it doesn't hang down so low.
