View Full Version : Dirty Valve Body?

Hey guys! I have been trying to pinpoint all the symptoms of my transmission trouble that has been occurring as of late, and if you guys can make out anything from it, I'd greatly appreciate it. I think I might have to clean the valve body(s) out a bit, but here goes the description.

Reverse: Sluggish, feels restricted slight bit **choke?
1st: Restricted. No quick acceleration. Feels like brakes are applied just enough to reduce acceleration time. **choke?
2nd: Shifts into 2nd smoothly sometimes "pushes" or feels like its getting an extra boost as it engages
3rd: Does not seem to shift until about 55mph. It then shifts so subtly you can not notice it. For it to shift, I have to let off the gas a lot to allow it to shift. Especially when it shifts into 3rd for the first time.

These observations are noticeable only when the Chero has been sitting for approx. 4 hours or so.
After it has been running for a bit, (I can't tell how long. I'd say approx 5 miles +) it starts to shift normally. once it straightens itself out, it is fine, with the occasional "push" mentioned earlier, in 2nd gear.

**Choke=the possibility of the choke not working, as I have yet to hook the weber's electric choke up to function, so the choke stays off. which might possibly explain the sluggishness in reverse and first. but i don't think it would explain the lack of shifting from 2nd to 3rd.
My father and I were running the idea of the dirty valve body, and quite possibly the transmission just being old, and not used to the new motor we put in 4k miles ago. Especially since I've been putting a lot of miles on it as of these past two weeks. approx. 400 miles alone. The transmission is the original one from the factory.

I appreciate your patience with my questions guys! Even if you can't help.

sounds like a 727/999 that needs the kick down linkage adjusted

Adjustment.
Dirty tranny filter.
Lasty, tranny pump.

Most likely first option as 55 mph is pretty high for the shift into 3rd. 37 or so is about right IIRC.

I agree with hammer. Adjust linkage and dirty filter. I ran some lucas treatment through mine for a few thousand miles before changing the filter. Now all is well with the tranny.

filter is new, came with new tranny pan, unless the added oil (its a +2qt pan) flushed the trans out better, or the filter is different (possibility?) and so picked up more dirt, there shouldn't be a reason to change it, should there? It only has about 1000 miles on the new filter. Also, tightened the shift linkage at the same time, as well as the throttle control rod.

If I might make a note, as I've observed over today, that it is not the 55mph point, that it will then shift into 3rd. it has now come to my attention, that after driving at 40-45 for an extended period of time (approximately a mile) it will then shift into 3rd, with little to no letting off of the gas. so, this now means that the entire problem with the transmission is that it is initially sluggish in shifting. I'll check the filter tonite, although, the oil seems to be the proper tint of red. (will i be able to use the oil over again?) But also, where is the kickdown linkage? My Haynes Manual only mentions a kickdown switch above the accelerator pedal that is self adjusting.

Could it also be possible that there is a lack of pressure somewhere? The one thing that boggles me, is that after a bit of driving, the Chero runs fine.

Linkage goes from the carb to the back of the manifold. Shaft goes down to just above pan level, and has another piece that should be bent around your shifter linkage.
Sounds like it is not adjusted tight enough. Adjustment is at the carb. There should be a large U shaped rod connected to the bottom of the throttle linkage on a pivot. A few inches back from this should be a 3/8" nut holding it tight. Loosen this nut, and shorten the linkage for a firmer kickdown (supposed to leave enough slack to allow for full travel of throttle, but for testing, you can shorten further to make sure). Just remember to set it back after testing to allow for full movement of the throttle.
