Hi guys, My 76 J-10 is leaking from what looks like where the drive shaft enters the rear end. I wanted to replace the seal, but the guy at the 4WD shop told me if it leaks that bad, and hums when I slow down (it does) the ring and pinion gears are probly fried. What do you think? Can I drive like this a week or 2 without nuking them? Also how difficult are they to change? I'm not a mechanic, but can follow directions and have done mechanical work sucessfully... usually. Thanx

That guy is a moron that wants to rape your wallet. Vibration/hum is the first warning of low fluid. STOP DRIVING IT! Change that pinion seal... its REALLY easy.. and the seal is about 4 bucks.

Well....that guy can be right..depending on howlong its been doing it. hum = hardsurface of bearings is gone. once the hardsurface goes the bearings go VERY fast. And will wear what ever they are turning against.
But as snake said..DO NOT DRIVE IT ANYMORE!

I don't have an answer to your problem and in hopes of gaining information on the issue of rear ends (jeep rear ends)...here I am. My rear end is loose and has a sort of hum at 25 mph. The guy at the driveshaft place said I need to have it rebuilt and shimmed. It's a $450 bill. So I have been driving it (6250 miles in a year). Is that bad?

You can replace the outer bearing/seals with out having to pull the diff, or having to have it "professionally" done. It's not hard, once you get the yoke off. Much cheaper than the $600 bill of having someone else, that you don't know, do it for you!!
