D18 gears into D20??

i've heard it's possible. anybody done it? so far what i've managed to learn is that you can swap a few gears from the 18 into the 20, and the 20 might need to be ground away a bit at the inside. can someone fill me in a bit more? thanks smile.gif

in a nutshell: you can configure all the 18 parts into a d20 housing,essntially creating a d18 wiht a "large index hole" that will bolt to the t18,t15,etc. no case grinding needed.

you can use just the gears from a d18,along with the upper sliding gear from a bronco 20, and the rest of the 20 internals to create a 2.46 low range 20. this will require the case to be clearanced to make room for the larger bronco upper slider.

Scotty, I didn't read your link, but the D18 from the bronco has to be pretty specific. I.E., hard to find, from what I can tell.

huh? :confused: the spicer 18 was used in lots of early scouts and jeeps,and are pretty readily available. the version you need has a 1.25" intermediate shaft and was used from '55 to '70.i recently picked up 2 for $80 complete with input gears at a scout swap meet. there were 2 other guys selling complete t90s with 18s attached for $50.

the bronco 20 is alittle harder to find,but not impossible if you scrounge swap meets,sale papers,"for sale" forums and Ebay. kyrel pretty regularly finds complete bronco d20s for $100 and less. also,you only need 1 gear from the bronco case,so you can buy 1 cheap that is partially disassembled or broken,as long as that upper slider is ok.

you will need from a bronco d20: upper slider,spicer # 18 8 58

from a spicer 18,with the 1.25" intermediate shaft you will need:
input gear spicer # 18 8 23
hig range gear #18 8 24
intermediate gear 18 5 9
lower sliding gear 18 8 22

you are not discouraging me. i have a whole set of bronco gears if i want to build a 2.46 d20,plus i have 3 spare spicer 18s. tongue.gif i dont need to find anything ;)
