Just got a 87 Grand Wagoneer and am ordering the Hayne's manual for this year but what other manual, such as Chiltons, would be good to purchase? I understand one of the Chiltons dosent cover FSJ's such as the Grand Wagoneer is this correct? Any help would be greatly appreciated since I am a complete noob.

Stick w/the Haynes. Original Jeep factory user's manuals are hard to find, but can be found with internet persistence. Haynes is pretty thorough, but REAL skimpy on t-case info.
BTW--that Orwell quote has been burning up the internet for a long time. Orwell scholars cannot prove he ever said anything like it and is most likely urban legend/disinformation. Some sources claim he gave it on a BBC broadcast dated 4-4-42 but there's no evidence of that, especially since his vocal cords were damaged in the war and he had no real speaking voice. The closest scholars can come to verifying that quote is from an Orwell essay on Rudyard Kipling written in '42: "Kipling sees clearly that some men can only be highly civilized while other men, inevitably less civilized, are there to guard and feed them."
Didn't mean to get off track, but I looked into it when I read it 'cause it seemed so out-of-character considering his work.--Brent, poor man peddling poor man's encyclopedia....

Any suggestions on where to get more in depth info on the transfer case, since I am having some issues and that was one of the reasons I was ordering a manual? Interesting information on the quote I always liked the quote but it always seemed out of place coming from Orwell. Bout time for a change anyway. Thanks for your reply.

Which begs the question---why is t-case info the HARDEST to come by?--Brent

They have the factory Jeep maunals on CD now, some are on ebay for sale, just search "Jeep Grand Wagoneer"

But I've stuck to my Haynes Manual for a long time now....
Good Luck..

I say suck it up and get the factory TSM for your specific year vehicle, including shipping I paid close to $45 on ebay for mine, but it has proved its worth many times over, I do keep the haynes manual in my truck for emergencies but it pales in comparison to the real thing.

good luck,
Robert
