Hello from England!

My FSJ addiction has reached a serious stage. I'm seriously contemplating the Wide Track Wagoneer idea (I'm also still wrestling with the scanner to send you all photographs).

Sat here in England, I am in need of accurate information so that I can work out what I'm letting myself in for.

To paraphrase Sir Winston Leonard Spencer Churchill :

'Give (me) the tools and (I'll) finish the job'!

I need accurate answers to the following questions :

1) Is the differential positioning on all Wide Track axles the same - if not, what are the differences?
2) Are Quadratrac and selectrac transfer cases the same in respect of propellor shaft (driveshaft) take-off points?
3) Is there much to choose between Turbo Hydramatic and torqueflite 727 gearboxes?
4) Was quadratrac ever available with torqueflite 727?
5) Are the bodies interchangeable between all Wagoneers early through to late?
6) Are the suspension springs interchangeable between early Wagoneers (say 1976) and late model Grand Wagoneers?
7) Am I really ever going to find aa accident damaged late model Grand Wagoneer with a mint red leather interior - and if I did, how do you go about exporting an insurance write-off?
8) Are all wide track axles Dana 44's?
9) Can you get air lockers for all FSJ axles?
10) What is the difference in off-set between the aluminium 7" wheels fitted to the Wagoneers and the 8" steel wheels fitted to the wide track models?

If you want to see this project take shape - them I need answers!!!

Cheers,

Paul.

Hello,

There was a gentleman whom I believe replied to a post in the classifieds several weeks back. I can't remember his name (DUH!) but he was a dealership man from the AMC days of Jeeps and probably could answer a lot of those questions without any trouble.

Maybe someone else will remember him. He offered his advise.

I can only answer the body question with a small yes. There are slight changes in body positions of holes and punchouts, but I think your good to go (especially with your shop) to make anything fit together nicely.

Tailgates are prolly different, but you should do something custom there IMHO.

Paul,

1) Actual Differential positioning on wide and narrow track axles are the same... the only difference is the axle tube/shaft lengths.

2) Depending on what transfer-case you currently have 208/219/228/229 will determine the length. I believe my 228 was WAY bigger than the BWQT. I had to lengthen my rear driveshaft 6 inches when I switched from the 228 to the 208. Lengthening will cost you somewhere in the neighborhood of $150.00 (sorry, I can't translate the amount into the pound http://www.ifsja.org/ubb/biggrin.gif )

3) You've got to do a little homework on your transmission actually.. my J-10 had a TF904B transmission.. that or a TF909.. I can't remember exactly. What it was supposed to have according to the books is the TF727. There is only one kind of 727 for the AMC Jeep, and one kind of TH400 as well.

4) Nope... only with the TH400

5) I think the bodies after 1974+ are interchangeable... before that, there were different frame schematics due to the closed knuckle front axles (I think was brought up before).

6) They should be interchangeable with a 74 and up... that whole open vs. closed knuckle thing again... the way I see it is, if the rig has Disc brakes up front, it should be interchangable.

7) Your guess is as good as mine, but good luck to ya! http://www.ifsja.org/ubb/smile.gif Every time I go to a scrapyard and see a crippled Wagoneer, I kinda feel bad for it... there were too few of these made to be sitting there, discarded... BTW, the one I saw yesterday had brown leather interior.

8) No! There's Dana 27, Dana 35 and Dana 44 for the narrow track 1/2 ton. There's Dana 44 for 1/2 ton Wide track, and a Dana 44HD for 3/4 ton wide-tracks. In the rear there was Dana 44 and AMC 20 in both wide and narrow track 1/2 tons. Dana 57 and Dana 60 full floaters were used in wide track 3/4 tons.

* Dana 60 was also used in wide track in the M-715 and a Dana 70 rear. 1 1/4 ton rated.

9) I believe the ARB Air Locker is made for the Dana 44 axle... but not the AMC 20 (you'll know you have a 20 by a perfectly round cover). However, there's not a *major* driving difference with a locker in the rear, so I'd suggest a Detroit Locker in the rear that they made for both the D44 and the AMC20.

10) My Wagoneer narrow track rims that I put on my J-10 a while back had the mounting plate almost all the way to the outside edge.. about a 1 inch backspacing from the outer edge. My Original steel wheel had a 2 inch backspacing from the inside edge.. so they stuck out and were able to be a bit wider.

Hope this helped! http://www.ifsja.org/ubb/biggrin.gif
