Okay, brand new here, been pawing thru the troves of information here for a few hours... so here's my question, pardon the FSJ newbieness. :D

So I'm looking to swap a 360 (into my CJ-7) out of a Grand Wag we have in the yard (pretty sure its a 78 or 79) which as I gather would mean it has a TH400 tranny. However, I want to use my Dana 300, so we also have a TF 727 laying around too that I can use. So, one of my questions is, does the 360 use a common bellhousing, or am I gonna ahve to use the 727 bellhousing?

Also, just to confirm for the umpteenth time, the 300 will bolt to the 727, and the 727 will need the kick down linkage and some kind of shifter. I'm planning on putting in a grand wag column too, so maybe I can make the column shifter work.

So who's got some input for a new guy? TIA

If the 727 was cast for AMC, it will bolt directly to the 360. Chrysler made some AMC specific 727s, in the same way that GM made some AMC specific TH400s. Either way, the 300 will bolt directly to the back of the AMC 727, and it will need the throttle-valve linkage (not the same as kick-down linkage).

A 727 from a 1980-1991 Wagoneer/Grand Wagoneer or 1980-1983 Cherokee or 1980-1987 J-Truck will work just like you want.

I'm doing the same thing for my CJ project.

The bellhousing for that tranny is AMC specific. The output of the tranny has the NP2xx series bolt pattern and 23 spline output shaft. The CJ Dana 300 has this same pattern and matching input shaft. (other versions of the D300 do not)

The only potential problem is that the 727 has some kind of bump out just behind the bellhousing that will get hit by the front driveshaft if you don't lift the CJ 4-5 inches or use a 2 piece driveshaft.

Many report interference with the stock wagoneer kickdown linkage. A common replacement is a Lokar kickdown cable.

As far as the waggy shift linkage, I don't have any idea if it will work. I'm just going to be putting some kind of aftermarket floor shift lever on mine.

I'm going SOA, so lift won't be a problem, I did read a lot about that front driveshaft interference.

I've been in a manual tranny mindset for so long that I can't keep it in my head that automatics have the bellhousing attached. So yes, I mean using one that we have out of a wag and bolting it to the AMC 360.

Thanks for the info guys.
