Just did the brakes and had the rotors turned. How tight to the spindle nuts need to be? Thanks a bunch!

The inner nut needs to be torqued to 50 ft-lbs. Best turn the wheel while doing this to seat the bearing and then back-off the nut about 1/6th of a turn. The outer spindle nut gets torqued to a min of 50 ft-lbs and remains torqued.

Joe, does this apply to the older rigs as well? my 69 had some front end shimmy and noise this weekend that I think is wheel bearings, but I didn't use the torque wrench on the bolts. the svc manual for the 69 says to "tighten the nut ... until there is a slight drag on the bearings when the hub is turned. Then back off approximately one-sixth of a turn". The chilton's manual states the same thing for the 62-79 years, 80-83 is 50 ft lbs and 1/4 turn backoff, and 84-86 is what you stated above --- is there any difference in the spindle setups or the bearings across these years? myself, i prefer to have some sort of torque setting to shoot for vs the german torque setting of "gootentight" <props to riverbeast>

MikeD: Just curious, did your FSJ come with 5-lug axles? If not, how and why did you convert?

Yeah pretty much Mike. The later years give a specific torque number but all you're really doing is seating the bearing then backing the inner nut off a bit.

hey francis, using 5 lug all around, D27 up front (soon to be d44 from donor 73 j2000) and d44 w/powr-lok & tapered axles in rear. this is the stock setup for 69
