I have a 78 j-10 with auto 400 and q/t. I want to do a ford engine swap but i need advise on hardware. It will be a ford engine of some kind. I have a stroked 351 windsor but would like to use a big block, is this possible. Did ford make a pass side drop t/c or should i use a frontend out of a wag with a drivers side drop and is that even possible. I do not want to use the q/t transfer case, i would like to use a manual shift t/c. please post possible combinations to make this happen. Thanks for any and all info u can give me.

I will tell bentpushrod about your questions he has figured out everything you need to do to accomplish putting a 460 in a FSJ. Might be tomorrow for he gets to it. But it is one of his dream combo's. MG :D :D :D

Ford always used driver's-drop transfer cases; You might be able to adapt a Ford tranny to a D20 or NP205 transfer-case.

Well I haven't exactly figured it all out yet smile.gif But the 429/460 swap was high on my list when I had a wagoneer.

Should be a fairly straight forward swap. Make motor mounts. The wiring should be a breeze, as your '78 already uses a ford duraspark ignition. I forget where the outlets are located on the Jeeps radiator. I'd look for a 460 mated to a C6 and a married NP205. I wouldn't mess with spendy adaptors. Relocate the crossmember to where it needs to go.

Now to the big issue, the passenger drop axle on your J10. I'm not sure on the J10's, but wagoneer spring perches are the exact same distance as 77 1/2-79 F250 and F350's. An added bonus is the ford axles are soa already. I'd look for a d44 or a d60 from a F250 or F350 in the years I mentioned. Slap that in, make up some drivelines, lift the rear and voila! Big block ford power. Also might want to swap the rear axle out for a J20's D60 or get the rear axle out of the ford to use so you have 8 lugs all around.

Now if your j10 was a '80 or newer, you wouldn't have to mess with axles.

You can change the input shaft on a Dodge or GM NP205 to a 31 spline Ford shaft. Depending on the adapter, you may7 have to reclock the tcase by drilling new indexing holes.

check with Advance Adapters (http://www.advanceadapters.com) or JB Conversions (http://www.jbconversions.com) . One of them will have all the info and hardware you may nees for your conversion.
