Hey all,I just bought a 73 javelin for a winter resto project,Question,I have a 360 out of a 78 jeep wag, will it bolt up to a 904 trans,or should I just overhaul the stock 304 and put the 4barrel carb and manifold from the 360 onto the 304??Thanks Gary

Did the 904 come in the Javelin w/304? If so it'll bolt up to the 360. Also if the 360 from the 78 Wag had a TH400 behind it originally you "must" remove the crankshaft insert from the 360 to get the Chrysler trans to mate. It'll still bolt up with the insert left in but you'll eat the pump or valve body(or some such part) in the trans so be sure to remove it.
I think(?) you'll need to change flex plate too.
Just a thought here keeping in mind I don't know much about AT's and even less about Chryslers but isn't the 904 a bit of a weak tranny for a 360 especially if you'll be running it hard?(I would be if I had a Javelin ) smile.gif

I agree, the bushing from the end of the crank has to be removed. Took me about 15 minutes with a small puller to get mine out. Flexplate on the 360 has to be changed as well, in both cases it only matters if it was mated to a TH400. If the 360 was mated to a TF tranny, then you should be all set. The 304 flexplate can't be used as it has a different balance weight than the 360.

The 904 is a bit weak but will live if the Javlin is not used hard you will have to get a flex plate for a 360 with chryco tranny. I used to have Javelins and they were fun. A 360 4v will make them scoot. The weak link (other than the 904)is the 2pc axle shafts like the CJ's use.

I hear alot of bad about the two piece axle setup, but a buddy of mine in FL races his Jav with the two piece setup and has never had a problem. Been 8 years now. He runs a posi and turns alot more juice than a stock rig through the 727, which I believe is the same as the 904 w/o overdrive. Or is it the 999?? Can't remember. Granted, I wouldn't have a truck with the two piece setup, but he's living proof they survive on the quarter mile....

Thanks for all the info!I think I will overhaul the304 and upgrade to the performer package with 4barrel sounds like it might be easy and not as much cussing! smile.gif
