I was told today that I need a moderator valve. Do trans. in an 85 Gwag have one? Also how much should I pay for one. I do not know much about the trans. I know that I am losing fluid and it shifts funny from second to third. It is smooth, but the rpms go up and creats a small hesitation. Hope you guys can help...
Thanks
I can't help on the workings of a 727 but a common complaint of owners regarding leaking is the seal at the spud shaft that sticks out of the trans where the shift linkage hooks too. Ya might wanna check there for leaks?

S, if you mean modulator, thats a gm deal and may be found on a th400. the 85 has a mopar 727 and doesnt have a modulator. now the disclaimer.i could be wrong, seek a second opinion. i have done very little work on a trans. the 727s i have had are very durable. yes, as Joe mentions they do leak around the the shifter.i would also check the lines going to the radiator cooler.ESPECIALLY, the line where it crosses underneath the front of the oil pan. the bracket failed there on my 84 and rubbed a hole in the line. one transmission later, i discovered the leak. i went to harvest the line from my 81 and found that it too was rubbing a hole. if the rig has an external trans cooler, check that out too. that was the source of a mystery leak on my 88. before getting radical, i would first check the fluid level. even a pint low will affect the shifting. next check the fluid itself. is it dark brown or black. does it smell burnt? if yes, then the next step is to change the fluid and the filter. when you drop the pan, pay attention to the stuff in it. the stuff is ground up trans innards. big chunks arent good. the loose washer is a magnet, it should be cleaned and replaced. if the leak is just around the shifter, then i would just check the dip stick regularally. buy a funnel and a qt of atf. in order to change the seal, the trans has to come out, or so i was told. the 83 leaked like a sieve there. i could be wrong but newer generation 727's actually known to trans builders as 904's did have modulator valves

Rougestar,
The 904 and 999 are light duty versions of the 727 and were only for smaller units, like
CJ7 or Eagles. The 999 did have a lock up converter.

I just bought an '87 with 50K and the tranny had some trouble from sitting with no use and short trips. The valve and clutches were shot. My tranny guy took it down and rebuilt it stem to stern for $ 750.00 .
I am sure when you get it down there will be other things that are gone or marginal so it would be in your best interest to replace that stuff now instead of patching it and having to drop it again in 6 months to fix something else.
I don't know that much about tranny's so that's why I took it to a shop. Just look for a small shop that specializes in trannys and won't "take you for a ride" !

the 727 does have a speed sensitive valve
a rod conects the carb linkage to a trans valve and you better hope you do not need a new one the stupid thing is Inside the trans
and from what i have heard a MEGA Bi**h  to deal with i hope this is not what is wrong
