How many exhaust manifold bolts should there be? Chiltons doesn't have a pic. I ask 'cause it was fairly warm today so I went to address my pass side exhaust leak. Seems like there should be 6 bolts per side, but I couldn't see the very back too good. Anyway, there are only 5 in my rig (no bolt in very back). Also, anyone have a source for these hollow (crack-preventing) bolts? I called NAPA and looked at some sites online with no luck. Or is anyone running solid bolts?
Thanks,

They do indeed take six per side. Hopefully they just left the bolt out and didn't break it off in there.

Stuck a nail in the holes to check, they are not broken off inside---whew! I guess I'll call the dealer tomorrow.

I need to replace my bolts too. Should I get solid or hollow ones? I'd think that if you coated them good with anti-seize the solid ones would work fine. A good thing about the hollow ones is that if they break off you can drill them out real easy.

There are indeed six bolts; up to '79, they used 3/8" bolts in all holes, but in '79 and later, they only used the larger 3/8" bolts in the two center holes, and used smaller 5/16" bolts in the outer.

When I rebuilt the engine on my '88 GW, I decided to "do it right" and ordered replacement bolts from Chrysler ($$$). When the package came, the four 3/8" bolts were indeed hollow, but the eight 5/16" bolts were solid... http://www.ifsja.org/ubb/frown.gif

Anyway, I think the main advantage is that the center hole provides a nice pilot for drilling out broken bolts. Given that no other maker needs these to prevent their engines from cracking, I regularly replace these hollow bolts with grade-8 solid bolts.

Ditto what Bob said. I just replaced all 6 bolts on the drivers side w/solid grade 8 bolts. Cheaper than the factory replacement bolts and arguably better.

Follow PAJEEPERS advise and mine!

Coat the bolts with a good aluminum based anti-size. You will thank yourself years from now or you'll never be called a DSPO!

Good luck!

Two more little things: the correct sequence is to begin with the inner two bolts and work you way outward; and remember to retorque them a week later or so.

In my case, with the headers, there's no way to get a torque wrench in some of the places, so I've had to just get them as tight as I could. Also, these Stage8 bolts are excellent even though expensive at $55/set. They're a real PIA to put in because some of the retaining tags had to be trimmed to fit in place. The only time I've had trouble with loosening bolts is when one of the tags fell off (don't know what happened to it, but Stage8 immediately sent me a few extras).
