An NP208 is a direct bolt in.

NP208 (J) will bolt in but you will need a different front drive line (for 4x4) and
the shift linkage may be different. The closest would be a 229 or even a 219
(I would prefer the 229 for the 2wd mode)

Oh wait, (second one) the 228 was used in the grand (and I assume now the baby wag also)
and the olny differance between the 228 and 229 is the 229 has a viscous coupler
vs the open diffy in the 228 (in the grand), so unless the baby jeeps used different yokes or
something else funny I would guess a grand waggy case would work ??

1980-83 Cherokee, 1980-87 Wag and J-10'ss will work. They were also used in the 80+ J20's but have a different input shaft so it won't bolt to your trans.

My above post refered to the np208.
Sorry, that wasn't real clear there was it, it was a reply to your post:

"what models and years can i pull the sugguestions from? i just need 2wd for now"

I figured you were meaning the suggested 208 swap.

The NP208 is a simple chain driven t-case, but you will need different linkage and possible drive shafts. NP229s are virtually identical, minus the viscous coupling internally, so they would readily swap in. I'm in the process of swapping my NP229 for a NP208 right now. Check out the link below for some visuals:

I hope it helps

ps: There is a rescource of what transfer cases can be found in what years, etc. in the tech section. I know I use it a lot to answer my questions.

That doesn't mean all those did come with a 229 but it was avail on all. It'll also only be found behind an AT.
You're really going to swap "in" a 229? Ya must really like full-time 4WD. You can buy two working 208's for what just the VC in a 229 costs. Oh well luxury has it's costs I guess smile.gif

That sight is here on IFSJA in the technical section. It is from Bob Barry and is an excellent reference (I take a copy to the junk yard to help see what I might be looking at). It is a listing and definition of the properties and availability of the T-cases in FSJs.

So you can bolt up a older case, to like a 85 Grand wagon, to get the front driveline to go to a frontend with the differential pumpkin on the passenger side??? Would it bolt up to the rear the same too??

I'm not real sure what the question is but yes you can "generally" bolt up with some minor mods any 80 and later x-case to an 80+ FSJ(there are exceptions though). To use a pre-80 x-case in an 80+ you'll need to swap out the front axle to a pass side differential and maybe the trans too depending on what you have to start with.
It'd be a lot better(and clearer) if you told us what year/model x-case you wanted to put into what year/model/trans/FSJ.

hahahha, yea I just read what I wrote, and was thinking, "whats this guy talking about, oh thats me".

I have a 85 grand wagoneer, with 360, 727, front end with drivers diff. And was wanting to know if the older T-cases, would go in to adapt to the passenger side front end. I have both the front and rear ends from a chevy truck I was hoping to get under the Jeep.

Sorry for the confusion
