How to tell what engine is which?

How can I tell what engine a vehicle has by looking at it.. Does anyone have a Key or awebsute link explaining #'s or markings-thanx in advance

If you're referring to AMC V8s, all you have to do is to look at the number cast into the side of the block. The number is on both sides of the block, located under the motor mount bracket. The numbers are about an inch high, and raised. A 360 will say, "360", a 401 will say "401", etc.
