well, i was putting the rotors onto my rear hubs yesterday and ran across somethin that some of ya might find interesting.

the 14 bolt hub is very thick,so i have to use the 14 bolt studs to attach the rotors. i have some rotors here that came off of a mid 70s chevy d44,and when i put one on,there was nt much stud sticking thru the top of the hub. those that have had a frot rotor/hub apart will be able to picture this: the round part on back of the 14 bolt stud is bigger than the one on the front stud, and on the rotor i had,the recessed holes that the stud fits into was smaller on the rotor, keeping the stud from pulling further thru. hmmmm.

no i just happend to have a brand new rotor id purchased to experiment with the d70 hubs,so i picked it up and discovered the recessed holes were larger in diameter, plenty big enuff for the 14 bolt stud. so off to the 'Zone i went to purchase a second one. i purcheased it for pretty much the same application as the ones ive got(77 chevy 3/4 ton 4wd k20) so i am not sure why they are different.

but at any rate, the stud now pulls thru far enuff im happy with it. yippee!so the moral of the story is if youre putting front rotors onto a rear 14 bolt hub check the rotors youre using and make sure the studs fit inside those recessed holes.

the d60 is different cause its hub is thinner, and you can simply use stock front studs.

thot some of yas might find this info handy, since it seems more and more of use are doing swaps like that...

How much more would you say the 14 bolt weighs over the same length 60? Seems like every part on the 14 is heavier.

wellllll. according to one mag article the 14 bolt weighs 520 lbs complete with drum brakes. swappig discs loses some(ive heard up to 40 lbs per side,i doont think ive lost that much, tho) notsure how much a 60 weighs. i know the 14 bolt housing weighs almost as much as my complete 44 ;) had to have a friend come over and help me carry the empty housing over to the rear of the jeep.

everything is indeed bigger. the diff is massive and has to weigh every bit of 50-60 lbs with the ring gear  i can carry a 44 diff(cute) with 1 hand, but the 14 bolt diff i had to use both hands, arms straight, and when i got it downstairs i was tired ;) i was giving my d60 friend some Great Googley MoogleyGreat Googley MoogleyGreat Googley MoogleyGreat Googley MoogleyGreat Googley Moogley bout his little d60 diff with only 2 spider gears tongue.gif

here some other observations,2 of us can barely carry a complete 60,less drums and brakes. no way in heck 2 of us can carry the 14 bolt.

id be willig to bet a 14 bolt without brakes weighs 150-200lbs more than a d60 without brakes. thats just a guess, tho. maybe someone knows some actual weight numbers we could compare to...

although i am making my own brackets for the calipers in the rear(14 bolt)ive been told by many that the small calipers that will have to be used to fit in 15 inch rims will have less stopping power than the original massive drums.
