Okay the Haynes manual says rookies go home on this one. I at least want to give it a try.

The CC didn't work when I bought from PO. 88
GW had a MotoCraft 2150. I installed an Edelbrock 1406.

All I see is a chain at the end of a cable.
I pull on the chain ...no give. I don't even know where to hook up to the carb.

I have the "yellow box" under the dash but don't know where the wires on the other end are supposed to go to.

Finally I have a strange feeling that there is some kind of vaccum line that needs to be connected.

Can anyone help this CC novice?

I hope I can help.
The chain should hook up close to the accelerator connection. It works the same as your foot basically by just holding pressure to keep the carb open.

My vacuum lines run from the firewall behind the engine into a black ball shaped vacuum cannister. The vacuum source looks to be similiar to the AC style vacuum line(small and rigid). Then a large black line runs to a cannister above the drivers side wheel. THis is another vacuum cannister. Their is line between this and the servo. The servo is also located above the wheel and controls the amount of pull given to the carb.

The wiring I didn't quite follow. Is yours hooked up? If its not I can't help you except to say the plug is about an 1 1/2 inches long and white. If it's not conected it may be tucked up under your dash some where. the wiring runs through the firewall to the servo. Also, if you get everything hooked up you may have to makle adjustemnt at the yellow box. I let my wife drive while i adjsuted the settings to maintain our desired speed.

If your stock sytem is DOA. You may want to try an aftermarket setup.

Try and find a working or junkyard setup and follow the vacuum lines. Good luck.

You have the mysterious "what is that d*mn box for" box. Don't worry, don't mess with it. Its for cruise control. Mine says Dana with some numbers on it, and is purple...

The "yellow" box is your cc module...it's is $150.00 from your jeep dealer. I wouldn't spend a dime on one from a parts yard. The cc cable chain is connected to the throttle stud along with the accelerator cable via a small metal conector that holds the chain ball. The cc module goes from under your dash to the steering column at the cc controls on your blinker stem. You can check your electrical continuity from your cc switch to the box. If your current travels well my guess would be to replace your module. You might keep in mind that all your vacuum hoses need to be in tip-top shape. I probably didn't tell you anything you didn't already know but if it's any consolation...I haven't replaced my cc module yet (then again I don't really travel long distances...I haven't hit the lotto to pay the fuel bill).

Thanks for the input folks. Here is what I know:

1.I do have a yellow box...haven't tested the circuit.

2. The chain comes out of the firewall, but there is no movement with the cable ( aka bicycle cable type)

3.I have a black ball with hoses attached.

4. There is also the white unit ( speedo cable plugs into).

I must need a new chain and test yellow box.

I would check the circuit. Mine has a broken wire @ the turn signal. I kicks the cruise off every time I hit the high beams or use the turn signal. Luckily it is an exposed wire I can solder together again.

I would hold off on replaceing the box just yet. First make sure you have all the components and that there hooked up.
Trace the chain and find the vacuum unit that is connects to. The unit is on the inner fender on the drivers side. It has a vacuum line that connects to a black can (vacuum tank) and that has a vacuum line that goes to the vacuum tank on the firewall (usually a black plastic "ball"). When you find the unit that the chain connects to then pull the vacuum hose off it and try putting vacuum to the unit either with a hand vacuum pump, by sucking on it or using engine vacuum. You should see the chain move - if it does then the vacuum unit is ok. I havn't tried pulling the chain by hand but I would think that it has a pretty strong return spring. Then with the engine running check to make sure that you have vacuum getting to the vacuum can on the inner fender that supplies vacuum to the cruise control.
If that is not the problem then the next thing I would suspect is the cruise control switch/wiring on the turn indicator stalk. Check it like Hollywood said.
I would disagree with Dave about using parts yard as a source for the part. It depends on how much they want for it. I have gotten electrical parts from the local Pick-ur-Part for a very reasonable price, they were often cheap enough that even if the part didn't work out it was ok. Just take your electrical meter and check them out as best you can. But then I feel that the dealer's part counters are a big rip off and will only use them after ALL other sources are exhausted.
