Well after having oil spit from the dipstick tube Bob told me to check the exhaust cross over passage on the intake. Well low and behold thats what it was. The pictures speak for themselves. I had carbon actually building up on the valley pan. It was pretty obvious that they were leaking. For those of you that can't think of what the exhaust cross over passages are I posted a picture of the motor that shows them. They run from dead center of the head threw the intake to the other head. There isn't much to seal to so this time I will be sure to put a little more goop on it. For those of you that have blow by problems don't over look this little problem. Thanks again Bob!

Just out of curiosity, how many miles did you have on this intake manifold?

I just posted a message early this week about a possible intake/vacuum problem on my '83 Wag/360. I replaced the intake seals, and might have created a vacuum leak, or might have a cracked manifold. It's idling/running rough.

I'm wondering: in the pic of your valley gasket, is that orange-looking stuff sealant? It looks like you painted it all over. I just applied it where I thought the metal would meet. What kind is it, and how much did you use? I used a tack sealant, and I'm wondering if it was too thin.

I'm wondering if I need to re-do my manifold and try the other one from my 1979 Chero parts vehicle.

Yea I used some thin gasket maker that I just brushed on. I put the intake on in a big hurry. I will be using some ultra black this time. The motor only has around 3,000 miles on it so it really isn't even broke in yet. So to answer Ralph's question only 3,000 miles. I had some spiting before but I just last weekend took the truck on a road trip and thats when I noticed I had a problem. Oh well I will put it all back together in the morning and say a prayer to the Jeep gods!

Thanks. I've got a Jeep buddy over here right now who's got a similar problem. I showed him the pictures.

Well I took the Chero out for a 50 mile spin this evening and the spitting is gone...WAHOO! It was definately the cross over that was leaking. When I got home I checked for leaks and took the filler cap off and the filler tube was dry with no sign of oil. I plan on replacing the gasket on the wifes Wag because hers has excessive oil in the breather so maybe this will help with hers as well.
