Sounds like you have a case of skidplaterustitis. The syptoms are that your skid plate has rusted away and your tank is falling down b/c of it. That is what hold the tank up. I'd also chek your frame rail right around there also...may be rusted away. http://www.ifsja.org/ubb/frown.gif

nah, frame can't be rusty. i've got the FSJ self-preservation oil leak http://www.ifsja.org/ubb/biggrin.gif.

so where can i buy a new skid plate? dealership? any thrifty online stores?

You can buy a new skidplate from a dealer... for about $400!

Next-best bet is a rust-free skidplate from the Southwest; follow the links from the description in my Wagoneer page about doing this. Auto-Rust Technicians here in Rhode Island is also developing an aftermarket replacement for this part; follow their link and tell them I sent you (also tell them to let me know if this kit is readily available).

Peter:

Go to Hilltop Auto Salvage on John B Dennis Highway (423) 288-7926....Turn in like you're going to the speedway. They have a "new" '79 or so wagoneer up there for parts....I bought the tailgate for my cherokee. It also has some good fenders and bucket seats....The grill is perfect. I am sure it still has a gas tank and skid plate.

Sorry Willy, only 80 or 81 (for sure) up FSJs used the skidplate.

The skidplate will hold dirt and rust out the frame and skidplate. The only good news is that the gas tank is plastic.

Also if you do not have a offset diff on the rear axle, the idea of useing the older style gas tank is a no go. There is not enough room when the diff is centered. I could be wrong though.

Like Bob said you can call some yards in the southwest.

the skid plat was an option for several years before that, I just sold one off a 78 cherokee chief.

the wag they had at that salvage yard was an 81-82, so the skidplate should work out (assuming it's in better shape than my current one).

hey michael f: how old are ya talking about with wags? cuz the wags that used BWQT/Dana20 had centered rear diffs. did wags ever use the Dana 18?

I've seen the pre-'80 skidplate; nice thick steel attached to the bottom of the tank. Unlike the '80 and up units, however, it doesn't serve to support the tank.

The BWQT Wags (and the D20-equipped units as well, I believe, to save costs) used rear pumpkins offset by about 10"-12", since the BW unit's output shafts are both lined up offset like a D18.

If you are desperate, do what I did in December. Get a bunch of perferated piper hanging straps (a roll), some scrap steel & aluminum plate & sheet metal. Use the conveniently located holes in the various fame members, and extra nuts & washers on the hangers on the drive shaft side to rig something supportive.

Unfortunately, the jeep anti-rust sprayer doesn't get in between the tank and the frame rail. http://www.ifsja.org/ubb/frown.gif Do look it over when you fix it up right.

BTW. Anyway anyone with a decent junkyard skidplate is welcome to e-mail me to sell it! I've been meaning to order one from the SW for a couple of weeks. one of my round tuits http://www.ifsja.org/ubb/rolleyes.gif
