Well I'm finally financially blessed (temporarily) enough to grab my new axles for my 84 J10. I wan't 3/4 ton axles because of the weight of the truck, lift, tires, weight of pushbar and rollcage (once built). Which make/model/year vehicles do I look for in the bone yards and what good/bad tings should I look out for? How much should I expect to pay for a decent used set whole w/rims?
Also what is my axle width, someone told me it's measured from mid leaf to mid leaf, is that right?

well I bent my rear drive in a wreck, so when I get the new ones I'm selling these w/rims and tires as/is. Probibly to whoever puts the new ones on for me.

too bad you weren't on the board for a while, I HAD J-20 axles from a 1980 that would've bolted right in, for $200. But, they've been sold now. Go look for a Ford F-250 or 350, solid axle front, etc. They will have to be modded to fit, but it'll be worth it, IMHO.

Look for 1980 and newer J20 axles. They bolt in, and need no conversion.
I think Pascal (FSJeeper) might have a set available.

Hard to find J20s anywhere round here. Found one, looks to be a 70 model, only chassis, body and rear axle are left, how can I determine the condition of it in the junkheap? The guy says he'll take $200 for the whole rear end, is that fair if it's in good condition?
$200 for an old (condition unknown) dana 60 rearend? Not a great deal in my book....junkyard guys like to rape you.
He'll tell you that you can bring it back if it has any problems, but then you just did a lot of work for nothing, and you are left trying to talk money out of a .... junk yard guy. :(
I'd move on to something else...just my $.02

I would look for 78-79 f-250/350 axles.
