I was starting the Chief (360 2v) and it backfired thru the carb. It started but is now ticking on the drivers side of the engine. It sounds like bent pushrods. It has jumped time once before and everything was replaced by a dealer. I'll pull the v/cover and check/replace bent pushrods but should I check the timing stuff also...It seems to run ok.

I would try to rule out a leaky exhaust manifold first.

If it's not in the valvegear etc it might be a cracked piston - they make ticking noises. Especially if it has been overheated.
I thrashed a Zuk motor with a cracked piston for months once before I stripped it and found the problem.

yes, exhaust would be my first guess.

Mine ticks like that on both sides of the engine. I already know they are header leaks so rule that out first.

Stick a hose in your ear and move the other end around the exhaust manifolds...don't worry - your ears will prolly stop ringing after an hour or so... ;)

It really works, and it is simple...
