I have the engine out right now as it is being rebuilt but before it was pulled one of the problems it had was increased oil consumption when under heavy load. Was this an indication of bad rings? The oil consumption would pratically double from when the GW was run without towing anything. Any thoughts? TIA

I would say combo of rings and guides. Mine is going thru this now BAD. I am trying to round up a swap.

This is a great place for info, these guys here are VERY KNOWLEGDEABLE.

I guess there's 2 types of oil usage, the kind that ends up on the driveway and the kind that ends up as soot in your pipes. :D Either way, a hard-working engine is going to lose more oil out the seals and gaskets, plus suck in more oil to the cylinders (through the seals and by the rings). Under heavy load, the engines going to run hotter, oil's gonna be thinner so it's going to work its way in, especially in the lower RPM's. There's a flaw in that logic, too, cuz a hot engine expands and tends to seal up better, but that's usually at highway speeds with little HP being made.
Did you ever notice a lot of oil in your air cleaner?

rhamby, No I didn't notice a lot of oil in the air cleaner and I am not talking about loss in the drive way (due to leaks). Just consumption through use, exhaust pipes a little more black then usual. Thanks for all the input.

Since you brought it up, I did find oil in my air cleaner. Whats up with that? I have this funny feeling where my wallet rubs against my butt that oil in the air cleaner is gonna cost me bigtime!

Maybe not! If the PCV is clogged, you might be pressurizing the crankcase, and forcing oil past rings, valve seals, etc. It can also account for oil in the breather.

There has also been a couple guys on here that have found their manifolds are clogged up at the PCV hole, or down into the shield. I'm still getting a lot of oil out the fill tube, but I'm pretty sure it's excessive blow-by.
