Buttercup has let me down lately leaving me stranded twice now.
Cranks and runs fine ,drive it somewhere, run into store come back out and it won't start.
Turns over fine, smell of gas (flooding maybe?), let it sit half hour or so and it cranks like nothing ever happened.
73 j-4000 points dist. (no ignition box to worry about) edelbrock intake, carter 4bbl,everything else stock for now.

Gonna put on a new cap, points, wires. Maybe weak fuel pump, vapor lock? coil going? I'm leaning toward the electrical side?!?

I'm still running points too. What I'd do is new BlueStreak points, condenser, rotor, cap and wires. Set the dwell and THEN the timing, adj the carb. Then see what you've got, if that does the trick and I think it will you're set. If not then maybe you need to check the fuel pressure, float height and the coil. BTW Blue Streak is more expensive but well worth the extra money.

Mine does the same thing. Runs great, starts great cold, but shut it down for 10 minutes after it's hot, and it's hard to get started again. On mine, I've found that if I hold the accelerator pedal all the way down (DON'T PUMP- just push and hold), it will start up pretty good. This is obviously a fuel problem. I believe mine is caused by the lack of a carb spacer/insulator, which causes the fuel to vaporize. I've heard this symptom explained before in a magazine or something.
Anybody else had this or have a different solution?

I think it doesn't like being called "buttercup" :D :D

If your smelling gas then I would lean towards possible flooding. Next time it happens check for spark. If you have spark then look into the manifold for too much wet fuel in the bottom. Thats flooded.

Mine did the same thing this weekend but it was when it was cold. It smelled like it was flooded. Could not figure it out but then I went ahead and replaced the fuel pump. After a few drips of fuel it started right up. I want to say it is low fuel pressure. When it is running does it hesitate at all?

Thanks for the suggestions , I know the wires are old and crusty, and most of the stuff is bought already. Prolly won't get to it till this weekend.
There is an ocassional miss at higher rpm's, I suspect a weak fuel pump also, may replace it just to be safe.
I don't think "buttercup" minds her name but I'll take that under consideration also. :D :D

I see you have an edelbrock intake,if you did not put the heat shield from stock intake on the Edelbrock then your fuel may be vaporizing.A spacer should help here. This is just my opinion, please correct me if I am wrong.

it already had the intake/carb on it when I bought it,but if vaporizing were gonna be a problem wouldn't it have happened at least once during the summer while I was driving it nearly every day? This problem started after I let it sit for 2 weeks and put a few miles on the other vehicles that needed driving. Or is this all a jealousy thing? ;)

You should be ashamed of yourself!!!!letting poor buttercup sit for two weeks. You know better,of course shes jealous.

I would be ashamed IF I were driving say the ford or something like that, but I was driving the 74 chero. :D

No shame there!!Its nice to have two FSJ`s,just can`t wait till one of mine is completed.

Update: new plug wires, points, cap, etc. not much change-changed the coil too.
Gonna change the fuel pump next and see if that does it

The new stuff made it slightly easier to restart, hold it to the floor method.

Trick,

Small insight here...... If your needle and seat were worn out in the carb, you would get some leakage into the manifold causing your flooding problem....lots of good info here just adding to the mix for ya ;)

Someone already said to look inside the throat after a few minutes of shutdown... this may be your culprit.....

Vapor lock!!! Get a heat shield or an 1.5" spacer under the carb. Very cheap and easy to accomplish.
