i got a hold of the TFI wiring diagram to take a look at it before i do the setup. as i am looking at the wiring on my GW i noticed that wiring seemed already complete. i had an msd 6A installed already and it looks as though the mechanic spliced into everything. is the wiring similar from the TFI to the msd install? it looks like the only thing that needs to be changed is the coil connection. i can't get a hold of the mechanic now so i can't check with him. is there some way to verify it? how difficult was the wiring on a totally stock system? thanks for any and all replies

The wireing was real simple on my 88 GW. I bought an MSD wiring harness(Wiring Harness To Motorcraft TFI Coil Connector, P/N 8874, $14. )And spliced into the stock wires then pluged in to the TFI coil.
Everything els is stock I don't have a MSD 6A yet http://www.ifsja.org/ubb/wink.gif.

You will need new plug wires though.
The bigger cap has male ends.

I hope this helps.

The wiring is really simple from a stock setup. Since you have the MSD I don't know what typr of alterations may have been done but you can check my site out and see my TFI Upgrade page and there is also a TFI page in the tech section of IFSJA web site. Mine has pictures. http://www.ifsja.org/ubb/biggrin.gif

If you have the MSD, then the TFI may not be much of an upgrade. The Capacitve Discharge on the 6a is very high. That said...

If you have the stock coil, then I don't think thats making the MSD work to its potential. If you have an after market oil filled, like the Blaster 2, I don't know if the TFI coil is better. One way to find out is to try it. I've been meaning to d o that myself. If it survived the Crash I had a long post on what the MSD techies told me regarding coils & MSDs.

If you are using the stock Distributor cap, then wide cap may help as well. Just for reference, I'm running a standard cap with my MSD 6 without problems on my Plymouth. In good part thats cause their isn't any room to put a wide cap on!

i figured as much. i guess i just get real cautious when it comes to auto wiring. i think all that is left is the coil splice. at the end of it all i will run a full msd ignition. all the plug wires and coil wire, cap and rotor, and 6A boxare msd. hopefully this will improve my mileage and HP. but nothing is a miracle fix for these jeeps. thanks for the confirmation and help. oh yeah irbob i already checked out your site, that is why i went ahead and decided to do the upgrade.
