I asked the same question a while back and the guys told me to use a heat gun (someone said he had used a high powered blow-dryer) to soften the decal and use a *plastic* scrapper (putty knife) to help with peeling and not damage the paint. Final step (many tedious, frustrating hours later) is to clean the area with goo-gone or nail polish remover (acetone) to remove any left over adhesive. If you want to practice on my rig first I'll let you!

Automotive paint stores will have tins of adhesive remover. Its nice to have a big jug of it.

I removed the wood from my '84 GW a few weeks ago. It took me about 4 hours to remove the plastic molding and wood decals. The remaining clean up of the glue and some stained paint took anout 1.5 hours.

I am the guy that used the 1700 watt hair dryer to remove the decal. Your best bet is to heat the decal and pull it back with steady force and advance no greater than 6 inches at a time. I was able to remove most of the sections in one piece.

Get yourself a pair of thin working gloves to protect your hands from the heat. This way you can hold the decal while pulling and apply heat at the dsame time without burning your hands.

I removed the glue with goof off which should be availiable at any paint store. The staining I removed with rubbing compound.

Good Luck!

Wingo, was your wood still in good condition before you started or petrified like mine from 22 years of sun. I would like to remove mine after mech. upgrades. Thanks, Dean.

Mine was in okay shape on the sides and peeled of easily with the help of a hair dryer and Texas summer sun. The tailgate, however...it's toasted, the top woodgrain layer gone and the base vinyl burned, brittle, and stuck. It's still there http://www.cs.colostate.edu/~zeimet/ubb/frown.gif. Any suggestions?

Check out http://www.stripeman.com. Give them a call and ask for Kevin. He can give you the run-down on removing old woodgrain decals. There's a special tool now that he says is essentially a stack of vinyl discs that looks like a stack of CD's; you mount it on your electric drill and start ripping off both the decal and adhesive without hurting the paint underneath.

Ive been trying to find out about this for a long time, I remember years ago a pro paint guy telling me about a plastic or rubbery wheel that they used to take off that old glue. Everytime I mention it to anyone they just shrug it off and no one knows.. well that must be the ticket..
P.S. If you dont care about your paint underneath and are goin down to metal anyway, you can use heavy duty easy off oven cleaner..

Measure width of Jeep. Find two trees exactly 1/4 inch narrower than Jeep. Approach trees at 20 mph... report back to us soon...

I did that and it only took off part of the woodgrain and those pesky side mirrors and door handles. What Grit of tree should I be using? I went for a sasaphrass(however you spell that) but was thinking mabye I would try it again with some white oaks???

Clark, you could take some of those left-over u-joints (from every repair job you've ever done?) and mount them in the trunks of the trees, so that the trees would spin somewhat freely as you passed between them.

One of the best mail order, internet and retail store that I have founf for paint tools, paint coatings is:
www.eastwoodgarage.com (http://www.eastwoodgarage.com)

If you do any body work of your own, you have to buy thier flange tool.

I remember seeing the decal remover in one of thier catalogs.
