View Full Version : Weird acceleration problem?

I have a weird missing/ hesitation during acceleration. It only happens after it is completely warmed up. It feels like a surge in power up and down and it happens during all types of accleration. Some background: 78 Cherokee 360 with Edelbrock performer intake (non-EGR) Carter AFB Performer 625 CFM carb and fresh rebuild. Headers and no Catalytic Converter. I have a rough idle but I believe it is because I have not finished dialing it in after the rebuild. I guess what I am looking for is if these symptoms are a dead give-away for a specific problem or if I am going to have to systematically go through everything. I have searched the post and have a good idea about what path to use for troubleshooting, I'm hoping for an obvious solution. You know how it is, after working so much on these things you hope you get a break once in a while.
Thanks for the help ahead of time!

Too much fuel dumping? Bad fuel (dirty tank)? New filter? Mine does it too, but only seems to really do it around the time I need a new fuel filter...

Luck with your quest!

A surge is usually caused by a lean mixture. Rich just seems to be sluggish all the time. Sounds like you need to check your mixture with an O2 sensor.

Responses to the above questions:
It is very rough at startup and idle. The filter and most of the ignition is new. No backfires at all.

Will a lean idle mixture effect cruising rpm? I thought idle set screws only effected idle?
I don't know enough about carbs to know about it's cruising adjustment. The carb is only 5 months old.
I am out going through all of the troubleshooting stuff now. Spark plugs, wires, vacuum leaks, etc...
Keep the answers coming!
Thanks,
Chris
