View Full Version : Positioning of the Power Steering hoses

In in infinite wisdom today, I removed both of the power steering hoses from the steering box and the pump in order to change them.
I was interupted in the middle and have connected them back to the best of my memory (Bad as that may be)
My question is that now that I have reconnected them and filled the pump and ran the engine to remove any air from the system, why does my power steering take 2 grown men to turn the wheel?
Please, could someone show me where the high pressure ps line connects? and also where the return ps line connects?
I have a forward (Closer to the radiator) and rear connection (Further away from radiator) on the steering box. Does the high pressure line connect to the front or the rear connection?

Brian, you still got the 87? if so.see how that goes. BTW ithought the hoses were different, pressure and return and only fit one way.

Well... It would seem smart to check the '87 to see what the lines look like, but since I had pulled the lines off the '87 to put on the '88 http://www.ifsja.org/ubb/smile.gif
I was beginning the installation of the lines and was distracted for a bit and put them back in what I thought was the right place.
Nice idea though... http://www.ifsja.org/ubb/smile.gif

Andy,
Thanks! I'm heading out to check out the Jeep and make sure where the hoses are connected!

Well... Thanks to all that read and considered telling this old fool that the power steering system requires a bit more air bleeding.
Yesterday, I replaced both hoses and cleaned the pump and added the correct amount of fluid. I ran the motor and moved the wheels from one steering stop to the other a few times and checked the fluid. I needed to add a bit to bring it to the level and then repeated the process about 2 times.
I let the motor set for about 10 minutes then started to take it for a test drive. NO WAY! The wheels didn't want to turn unless I put all my 290lb's into it!
Back to the driveway!
That is when I began checking the connections and wrote the original post here..
Now, this morning, after taking Andy's information, I went to check the system again. All hoses and lines connected correctly. So, I started the truck and Voila! The wheels turn sweet!
It appears that it is important to allow the system to set longer to allow all the air to move up and out of the system. The recommendation is 2 minutes, but I set it for longer and still didn't work. In the future, I will let the system set for a couple of hours after doing this and then try it again!
Thanks...
