If I put a 3'' body lift and 2'' overarch leafspring on my j10 will I be able to fit 35's on my truck?
thanks

Yes, you should be able to. I did a SOA on mine and got between five and six inches of lift and 35's cleared fine. I didn't loose my ride and all linkages in cab remained in stock location. You might want to look into that option also if you want some good clearance. Oh yea, it looked good too!!!!!! http://www.ifsja.org/ubb/wink.gif

whoa Cecil!!!...35's w/ a 258?? hhmmm...that is a bunch of tire for that motor!
and No I do not think it will fit.....I put a 4" suspension and rubbed REALLY bad with 33's....I added the 3" body lift and now clear real well, but I think it will rub with some articulation....BUT yours is a J, so I do not know if that is a fair comparison...

If it has the W/T fender flares, it should fit with 35's.... but if it is a N/T style...no... I would agree with Bart.
That is alot of tire without regearing for a 360 let alone a 258.... thought about a V8 swap yet if you haven't already, I would...Porkchop has 35's with 3.54's and he is going 4.56's with his 360 to get the 'power' back into his Waggie... very sluggish..so I thought when I had 33's and 3.54's

I have thought about swapping out the 258. I'm trying to get out of this as cheaply as possible, but if I have to do that I suppose I will. Thanks for the input.

If it ain't broke, soup it up! I say keep the inline 6; slap a cam in it, put a 2bbl or 4bbl carb on it, a set of dual outlet headers, and a good ignition, and you'll run with any V-8! a good source for increasing the I-6's potential is Clifford performance
www.cliffordperformance.com (http://www.cliffordperformance.com)
My dad and I built a 275 hp 292 cid I-6 using a stock bottom end with a cam, dual 2bbl carbs, dual outlet headers, and a mallory ignition. My little 6-holer had decent top end, but it could roast the tires in 2nd gear...LOTS OF TORQUE! Needless to say, we took a lot of camaros and mustangs by surprise! So who says you need to go with a V8? I'd build up the 6!
best of luck!

Anybody know the average horsepower and torque for the 258 and the 360?

Yah, I saw that one, but they cut the charts off, and I really don't believe that chryo gave AMC's stuff correct ratings....just my thoughts.
Oh, any suggestions on gearing? I'm pretty sure I'm gonna need to do that either way I go here.
Thanks

Cecil,
Don't forget the gearing. Everyone is talking about the horsepower and torque of the 258 - what gears you run will have more with moving those big 35s than the diffrence in the I6 vs V8 engine. I have had 28s, 31s, and 33s, on my 93YJ with the newer 4.0 I6 and gears are the key.

THat is true. There is no reason to throw your money away by putting it all in the engine. Gears are the key to power. I am sluggish off the go with the 3.54's but I am fine when I get up to speed. I will be putting in the 4.56's soon (I have been saying that for awhile) and then I will have the power back.

ive got 38s,3.31 gears, and a 258. mine is a dedicated trail rig,but up until this year i havent had anything to pull it with,so its always been driven to the trails. haspin acres is 73 miles from my house. it is sluggish, but if you lower your gears it should accelerate every bit as good as with your current tires.
i personally prefer the six. its super durable, and much easier to work on-takes up much less room in engine compt! dpends on your intended use,as well. if youre gonna wheel it,the six will provide you with all the power that you need. dont forget this equasion: more power=break stuff faster .
even with my old tired 258,38s and 3.31s on the street werent nearly as ba as youd think theyd be. offroad in low range, ive never not been able to follow someone casue i had a six cyl.

So what gears should I use? 3.73s be good enough? Thanks for the info.

Another idea would be to go with a differnt tranny, like a t-18 t98 that would cost about the same as the gears or less if you find one cheep, that would give you a much lower first gear and would help you off the start.
the six is a strong running motor seen scotty go every were with his and he has 38 and it keeps him from breaking a lot of stuff, if my 360 die or I keep breaking stuff I am going to put a 6 into mine.

Since the J-10 has wide-track flares, I would think that you would have no problems with that much 5" lift and 35s.
I think for 35s, 4.10s would be perfect. It would be really similar to 3.54 gears and 235/75R15s, which was the tow package gearing in the 70s. For better highway mileage, 3.73s would probably be fine but they would struggle a little more on hill climbs and such.

Ok, I think I'll look towards getting some new gears and rebuilding the 258 then. Anybody know where I could get some gears, and a guess on the cost? Thanks a lot everyone.
